Red Light BEGONE!

See Footnote before proceeding!

This hardware hack WORKS!!

N95 red [REC] light shining out the pictures? CHOP IT OUT... with how to guide

See Clear macro shots here. (Thanks to Trialsrider1985)

Read the instructions VERY carefully... Although the 'third' track is mentioned, it is in fact the outermost track of the two that lead up from the surface-mount capacitor nearest to the edge of the board.

I did much cutting and scraping of the track in the position indicated without success. I found it best to move up the track a little way, to where I could apply the blade and cut HARD towards the edge of the board, without risking cutting any adjacent track.

Let me STRONGLY advise you to use a magnifying device when doing this, the tracks are TINY and it's very easy to nick the wrong one!

If a calamity ocurrs... All is not lost, a replacement flexible track cable is availablle from here... Original Nokia N95 Flash Module - buy online from Blue Unplugged

I'm not 100% sure that is the cable needed but if it is, it's relatively inexpensive to replace.

If you carry out this mod, don't blame me if you make a boo-boo! ;)

FOOTNOTE
It seems that the internals of the N95-1 have altered on the latest versions and that there may now be a non-destructive means of removing the Red-Light curse for some of us!

Slicing up my N95?

Dont think so mate! He's gotta come up with a non-destructive way of doing it, I mean if I shot that much lo-light video I'd just cover the thing up with a piece of sticky tape!

Well, they say that Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread...

I did... and it worked for me!

Though I will admit to needing fresh batteries in the pacemaker by the time I'd done! ;)

Well, I'm glad to hear that you still have a working N95!

So, what was your inspiration to perform this mod? I must admit - I have only shot low light video at clubs, and the red-light hasn't bothered me. On a side note, I was SO impressed with the low light quality of the N95, it was noise-less and I was impressed. My friend had a 7MP decent camera, and the video from that was full of noisy pixels.. Go the N95!

I take it you don't need the warranty you've voided doing this mod?

I SERIOUSLY WOULDNT ADVISE ANY USER TO DO THIS!

Really? Am I the only one that likes that shutter click? If I'm not looking at the screen, that click tells me it's in focus, I find it handy sometimes.

It's not bad. I like it when it's appropriate for a noise like that to be made. I don't like it at a wedding when everyting is quite, when I want to take a picture of a sleeping baby without waking it, when I want to take pictures of the food at a tapas bar... things like this. It's nice that it's there, but it's a pain if you can't disable it.

Firstly, wouldnt it be easier to hack the camera software so it doesnt turn on the red light? Or perhaps just stick some blutac over the LED?

Secondly, its not Destructive as such. You can easily resolder the track together, or solder a small wire to bridge the tracks. Or if you dont want any LED functionality at all, you can remove the LED itself (unless its soldered to the ribbon PCB)

Thirdly, you can turn off the camera noises by replacing the WAV's with silent WAV's made in Audacity or whatever

I like to have the camera noises sometimes though... I just prefer the ability to hold down the "#" key to silence my phone and the camera.

And it's destructive to the point that it would surely invalidate even the most understanding of warranties.
