Wifi Causes my n95 to hang

I have a WPA encrypted wireless network at home and I can easily get my phone to make use of it. However, after a very short time browsing, the phone more or less hangs and the wireless connection cannot be established or terminated. For example, if I visit the mobile Google page it loads quickly. When I then select a link, eg News, it takes ages on the progress bar and eventually times out. After that, the wifi logo remains on the phone and the only way to get rid of it, and to continue most of the phones features, is to restart the thing! Not impressed so far.

Thanks

Yeah... something doesn't sound good. Is this an N95 you're using?

Hmmm. Would it be possible for you to try A) No encryption and B) WEP encryption and let us know if you still have the problem?

I will try again with WEP and without any encryption. And yes, it is an N95.

Another annoying feature I found is that if I use the wireless connection while using the GPS maps, it too can hang eventually. I might time it because it always seems to be after about 1 minute!

Roll on first software update I say! (Or is everyone else OK and it is just me? Do I need to send this one back? Let me know!)

I have not completely nailed what the problem is but it is beter at the moment without encryption (just specified the MAC codes on the router as security!) but if you REALLY bother the wifi it still has problems. It was also better once I did not have a wireless access point set up and I just connect wirelessly as and when I need it.

Still would like a flash upgrade I think though.

Has anyone sorted this issue yet? I'm very frustrated with this.

We could use an update for the software, whenever Nokia has the time to do it.
My N95 hangs sometimes, and I can work around the issue now, but still little annoying. If I have my browser set for my Home Wifi and I am not at home it will crash/reset the phone. If I let the browser ask me every time what connection do I wanna use it will work just fine (as long as I don't choose the HomeWiFi when not home).

They are some problems, but not big enough to complain too much. I hope Nokia will fix them. Anyway I can use the phone just fine with NO real problems. Excelent phone, I really like it. And not just me, everyone who sees it ... and when I show them what it can do they all freeze and restart their brain several times.

I too love the phone but it is in need of a flash update! To top things off a little, the default browser on my phone now does not open! I am tempted to do a reset (*#7370# etc) and reinstall all the apps that I am using.

Just so you know, when I try to open the browser (by holding 0 or through the menus) the screen flashes as though about to open it but then just returns to whatever screen I am on (eg standby page or first menu page). My current resolution was to install the Opera Mini Browser and that works fine.

Since turning off security the wifi has not been too bad. It still seems to time-out very quickly with certain applications and the work-around that I have used is to basically switch to the Connection Manager, delete the current wifi connection, this causes the application wanting the web to retry to connect and then things are fine again - until the next time. The menu shortcut (press and hold the menu key) is useful to keep switching between the connection manager and the wifi enabled application so when things appear to have stoped, you can easily switch, disconnect and then switch back again and re-connect.

Hope this all helps any of you out there having trouble!

- Oh, and don't get me started on how long the map application takes to acquire a sattelite fix! Oh man...!

Hey There

Try the following

On the router/access point
*make sure your router does not use any propritory speed features make sure the are fully disabled.
*lower the RTS and Fragmentation values on the access point to 1800 each.
*set the preamble on the router to Short
*set the router to 802.11g mode only.

On the handset.
Go to the WLAN connection setting under the settings tabs and then hit Options tab and then advanced settings.
*Change the RTS, FRAG and preamble setting to match the ones found on the router.

I suspect the issue is related to the number of packets being transferred at any one time, because the antenna is small i am guessing that it does not have the capability to accept these massive packets especially when running WPA/WPA2 encryption due to packet header size. The problem could also be related to MTU value.

Let me know how you go? If you try it out... i have made some changes and found that i can run very smoothly... Good call on the Mac security, i like your style.

Peace out.
