n95 usb jack broken- nokia repair says warrant void due to 'corrosion'

wtf?

my usb jack is broken and wiggles.

when i sent in in for under-warranty repair, it came back with a sheet that has a checkbox labeled 'this product is not warrentable and is beyond economical repair', with 'corrosion' hand written underneath.

i live in teh desert, this phone has had basically zero exposure to moisture or salts, and works perfectly except fo rthe broken jack.

has anybody has any luck forcing the issue with nokia?

im about ready to tear it open and solder it myself

dont force the issue, or tear it open, much easier with a T6!

did they send you any pictures of the said corrosion? if not then carefully take it apart using the service manual that can be found all over the tinternet and take the best and highest res pics you can of the board so i can have a gander at them. ill do my best to help you

well tbh a lot of people who come to me with liquid damaged phones swear blind they have never got their phone wet even with it apart in front of them with me showing the clearly obvious corrosion on the board.

take it apart and see but also you should ask them to provide evidence of the corrosion. most service centres worth their reputation will have a usb microscope to take pictures for just this reason.

I know what you mean Tom , a customer came in the other day with a 6500s that had a blank screen and stiff slider (I thought drop damage).
He swore he didn't think anything had happened to it and tried to look really confused when I took the battery off and water fell out of the battery bay (enough to soak the top of my leg! )
Another customer tried shaking his head in denial yesterday when I pointed out that the phone(N95-1) had been taken apart (despite the fact that half of the covers had been replaced by aftermarket ,black ones!)

how the heck do you open these things? my t6 screwdriver cant budge these screws! do they have a gorilla tightening these with threadlock at the service center or what? ;) the screws totally stripped my only t6 screwdriver.

i just dont buy the corrosion excuse. i have never gotten phone the slightest bit wet and we live in a very dry climate.

use the guides that are availiable. if you need help, then search for a pdf doc called n95 level 2 service manual either on here or google. they are not supposed to be available to the public but since they are i dont think ill get fired for pointing it out

they shouldnt be that tight, lookslike the people who took your phone apart before were rubbish at their job

thanks for the advice, i need to go to town to pick up a new screwdriver tomorrow, and i'll give it another shot.

i take apart gear all the time. for the size of these screws, they were impossibly tight

You should be using a T5 for the 4 x screws holding the front fascia on. Its T6 for the internal screws.
