Invalid packet data access point error after Software Update
Hi all,
I have searched for similar problems to mine and I have posted on whirlpool (aussie IT site) without any luck. The situation is:- I have a Nokia N95, which is about 5 weeks old. The phone is a Telstra branded phone, and everything was working fine up to about a week ago. I upgraded the firmware to the current version 20.2.011 (My phone is a N95-3). The update went fine, except I found myself unable to send MMS messages or use Telstra internet. I was also getting the above error after attempting to send a MMS 'Invalid packet data access point'. I checked my MMS and Telstra Internet settings and they were the right settings. I rang Telstra and we went through all the settings and the Tech Support guy told me that the phone was configured correctly, and the only explanation for the problem was that the Software Update had caused the problem. He further stated that until there was a fix, I probably wouldn't be able to send or receive MMS or access the internet, and that is why they advise people not to update their firmware. News to me, since I never heard that before, particularly when the update is through PC suite which comes on CD with the phone. Anyway, I have since done the following. * Deleted all settings and entered them again. Same error. * Performed a soft and hard reset. Same error. If anyone can help me fix this problem I would be eternally grateful. I love the phone, but really, if I didn't want MMS functionality I would have just bought an iPhone. I also cannot get the web browser to work at all. Cheers Shane |

Shane I'm having the same problem and was hoping to find an answer on your post.
I have an N95-3 it is working fine. I bought an N95-8GB transferred all my info and Sim card over to it and that's when I get the error message when trying to send MMS. Transferred Sim back to 95-3 problem doesn't exist. At least I can try to fix the software by using PC Suite, that's the next thing I can try, thanks to reading your Question. I had no idea how to go about that. Maybe you should try updating the software again, as there could have been a problem with the upgrade, especially if you did the upgrade using bluetooth or infared instead of USB direct connection. Just a thought. I hope we can both get answers to this Question. Good luck. Meganne |

Might I add the suggestion that before re-installing the firmware, that you totally uninstall PC-Suite and re-install the very latest version from the 'Net, along with the latest NSU, as the version of PC-Suite that came on a CD with the phone is certain to be out-dated now.

Thank you for that advice Spook.
Pls forgive this Grandma I'm not that familiar with software on mobiles, What is NSU? I purchased the N95-3 only 3 weeks ago, but the N 95 8gb I just bought from Ebay, it has Optus firmware and I thought this wouldn't be a problem but I was wrong. I would appreciate any help I can get on how to remove the Optus stuff and replace it with Telstra firmware as I have no idea how to do that. Will it affect my contacts, photo's etc.? sincere thanks in advance, Meganne |

NSU is the Nokia Software Updater.
To change the software will affect your photos and things, but this can all be backed up by installing the Nokia PC Suite. This will backup everything for you, and you can update your mobile. However you are looking to change the software, which can be replaced but t will affect your warranty. What is bothering you about it and why would it be more beneficial for you to have Telstra firmware instead of an normal generic one?

Thank you Sexyback. I appreciate your reminder to do a backup before I try the software upgrade.
The firmware in the N95 8GB phone (purchased on Ebay, no warranty) is Optus, not generic, and I am with Teltsra so I cannot send MMS or connect to Internet with the Optus firmware installed. I keep getting error messages as in the original post of this thread. Yes, I could go back to using the brand new Nokia 95-3, which I just purchased (on contract) with Telstra and everything works perfectly, then I wouldn't have this problem, but I wanted to put that phone away for my husband so that when he retires next year (and loses his work phone) he will have a really good new phone to use. Besides, I want the 8 GB phone for myself as I take more photo's and videos than hubby does and I already purchased a new PINK casing for it. LOL!!! :-) Many thanks, Meganne |

kilroy... Have you tried re-installing the same firmware with a later version of PC-Suite yet? If that doesn't cure your problem, then there are other avenues to explore.
Meganne... As the Optus firmware already in your phone is preventing communication with your Telstra carrier, then you'll need to replace it with either Telstra firmware as you stated or as Sexyback has suggested, with generic firmware, which should work with any carrier... IF the phone is SIM-unlocked. Either way you'll need to alter your Product Code in order to install different firmware. To do this you need either the Product Code for an N95-8GB on Telstra, or a generic version of the code. A good person to ask would be 93tid on this forum, he's the gen-kiddy on such matters, I don't have a clue about suitable codes from 'down-under'!

Finally I have a success story.
After reading, searching, and trying every suggestion under the sun to change the firmware, I finally went to our local Telstra shop, who said they had no idea how to change it, but they directed me to a little booth in the local Westfield's, 3rd party mobile phone repairs, called "Mobile Phone Hospital". After leaving the phone with them overnight, I picked it up the next day, paid $60 in charges, and now have a phone with Generic Nokia firmware installed. All I then had to do was contact Telstra and ask them to send the Telstra settings to the phone. Of course that took three phone calls, four different operators, multiple identity checks, but it is at last fixed. The Mobile Phone Hospital is in Penrith Westfield's, NSW and they have two other booths, one at Chatswood and they said they will be expanding again, but surely this type of 3rd party phone repairers are also available in other States. The most difficult part of this whole procedure was convincing the Telstra operator to RE-SEND the settings to my phone, which was ESSENTIAL to get it all working correctly. I am convinced that entering them manually would not have worked in this instance or similar cases stating INVALID DATA ACCESS ENTRY POINT. Thank you all so very much for your suggestions, I sure learnt a lot in the last few weeks. regards, Meganne |
