Memory Card Corrupt?

Hello there,

Did a quick search of the forums but didn't find anything like what has happened to me...

I had a 1GB card before and about a month ago I went and bought a new Micro SD 2GB Premier card. Everything was going fine, I took photo's on it the other day and that all went fine.

The bit that broke it I think was copying files across to the N95 via WiFi, it stopped in the middle of a song and then said memory error or something like that. I didn't really pay a lot of attention to it at the time, closed down the home network thing and left the phone alone.

Came to it this morning to play some music and all it says is "Memory Card Corrupted"

K, so I had a few things on there I wanted but I understand I shouldn't be able to recover them and they are probably gone. I tried formatting the card in the phone.

I get this message "Memory Card in use by other application. Contiune Anyway?" It's not being used as I made sure I put all ringtones, pics and apps onto the phone's memory.

I press yes anyway, the screen goes whiteish and then comes back up saying "Memory Card Corrupted"

What can I do? the Memory Card was from play.com so I guess I can send it back but I would prefer not having to. It should just format and work again right?

Any help would great!

Cheers, Dougiebabe.

Have you got a card reader?

If so use the error checking tool in properties/tools,this may fix it....may!

Unforuntaly not...

I was wondering if I used a card reader it may pick it up and I may be able to error check it.

Is there anyway to do it without a card reader? Was going to try in my digi-cam.

Does all it need to do is pick it up and put it in My Computer so I can right click etc etc?

Cheers for replying, Dougiebabe.

Well if you have a card reader or if your pc does you can click on properties go to tools and use the error checking tool and it might get rid off the problem.

There maybe a way to do it without a reader but i don't know of any.

Card-readers are available from any number of outlets, Mobymemory being just one... They're often supplied when you buy a memory-card.

In very simple terms a memory card contains, in addition to the files that you load onto it, a hidden list of what those files are and where they are... Obviously this list needs to be constantly altered and updated, as files are added and removed. Should anything unfortunate happen at the time that this list is re-writing itself, then the list is 'damaged' and therefore cannot be read. This means that although the files on the card are still intact, the card can't tell an application where to find them!

One method that recovery applications use is to scan the entire memory content, search for anything that resembles a file and give you the option to copy it elsewhere...

TIP: One thing you must never do is attempt to copy further files to memory which has files on it that have been accidentally erased. Erasing files by the standard method leaves them where they are, intact... it doesn't wipe them from the memory, it just removes them from the hidden list of contents. They are still there and can be recovered fairly easily... Once you copy more files to the memory, the likelyhood is that you will overwrite the ones you want to recover, meaning that only very expensive equipment stands any chance at all of getting your data back!

...And yes, I realise that many of you will already know all this! ;)

I have had a very similar problem with a "corrupt" memory card (8GB) which might have happened when I was copying in data mode across the USB cable.
In the end I tried going into Tools > Memory, and chose the "eject memory card" option. Then take the card out, restart the phone and put it back in.
Looks like all my data is intact.
