Unhappy Huge problems after firmware upgrade, pls help!

Blimey, where to start.....

OH has the 'normal' N95, and was having problems with his car kit, so decided to install the Nokia Software Upgrader on to the PC, and see what it said.

It said that he was using firmware v 10.0.018, and that it was upgrading him to 11.0.026. He hasn't been able to restore anything from the back up he made, and now not even PC Suite will recognise that his phone is connected to the PC. He didn't sync the phone anywhere else, or back it up anywhere else, though it looks like Content Copier may have done this (does this sound right? Sorry if I'm being dim, complete novice here )

Now, I posted about this on the Nokia forums, and was told that the v. 11 was for the 8gb model, and that I need v. 20 - is this correct? And if so, WTF is NSU doing installing v. 11 onto OHs phone??

Thank you so so much in advance

Suzie

There was a v.11 for the N95-1 as i had it,that may be the latest version for the network that the N95 is locked to.

v.20 is available but not to ALL N95-1's.

Have you also tried re-booting the pc then connecting again to re-store?

these are the firmware versions that the N95-1 went through:
10.0.018
11.0.026
12.0.013/14
20.0.015

but it you might not get the latest firmwares if your phone is branded. it depends on the network you're on. they have customised firmwares, so the release date is likely, unknown. perhaps version 11.0.026 is the latest for the mentioned phone at the moment.

if you're using windows XP, here's how to check if the phone is detected by the computer.
-press the Windows Logo Key + R
-in the "Run" box, type in devmgmt.msc and press enter
-in the device manager box, scroll down to the end. should see "Wireless Communication Devices". when you expand it, there should be a couple of Nokia N95 USB entries. (Generic, LCIF, OBEX (3 of these), Phone Parent). make sure none of them are disabled

also check you PC Suite connections
-right click the PC Suite icon in your system tray
-go to Manage Connections
-in the Nokia Connection Manager, make sure the box USB is checked

Thanks Mr G. I see - he's with Orange, so I guess he can only get v. 11 just now.

Oh poo, I just checked, and the last back up date on PC Suite was 20.07.2007, which is no good. When I put the memory card in, it says "Unable to complete installation from memory card. To install remaining applications, go to Application Manager". Any idea what this means? And when I go to tools, memory, options, restore, it just says "unable to restore. Not enough space to restore entire memory card." with a red exclamation mark. He deleted a load of videos to see if this would work, but it didn't.

The worst thing would be that he's lost every single contact, a huge PITA.

ETA: And thanks too hairilabubakar.

Ah,the dreaded Orange....maybe de-branding is on the cards then if you really want v.20.
Use the search to find out more about de-branding.

The unable to complete installation error just means there were some apps on the memory card before updating and they're trying to re-install but can't because of the update. It would be best to delete those if possible and then re-install them.

Ok, I've rebooted the PC and PC Suite is now detecting the phone, but it's still saying unable to restore.

I'm not too fussed which version firmware we have, I just want to be able to get his contacts back. Maybe I should delete all images from the memory card.... *scratches chin*

was any backup made in the first place, before the upgrade?

anyway, as Mr G suggests you could check your sim card.
go to Contacts> Options> SIM contacts> SIM directory

if you have a memory card reader, you could pop your memory card to you pc and check if by chance you've copied the contacts to memory card. on your computer, look for the folder
- (memory card drive letter):\Others\Contacts

alternatively you could check via the built in file manager
Tools> File mgr.> Left keypad to select memory card> Others> Contacts

Yeah, but only to the memory card (2gb one which he replaced a couple of months back). We weren't aware you could back up to the PC Suite too

The last time that was done was back in July, so I guess some of his contacts would be there, but not anywhere near all.
