Problem with the "#9" button VS the "End Call" button

Hello, folks. I'm a relativily new user of the Nokia N95 and a freshly new member of this site. I have an issue with this phone and I want to find out if there is a simple "DIY" resolution.

Every other time I open the slide to use the keypad, I experience this problem. It seems that the '#9' button and the 'end call' button are trying to share each others functions. If I press '9', the screen will quickly flash the number 9 and then clear the screen as if the red end call button was also pressed at the same time. The exact same happens if I press the end call button.

I browsed through the most recent half-dozen pages of problems and didn't seem to find an exsisting thread relating to this problem.
Is this a common problem? Is there a fix?

I haven't yet actually purchased this phone. I'm "trying it out" before I purchase it. I like it's features, but if it's not reliable, I may give it back and decline to purchase.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Actually, it's not that simple. This was some sort of "open box" phone and if I buy it the price is reduced to only $150, but I have to sign something waiving the right for insurance. The phone works great other than this one malfunction, and it just started doing this a week ago.

I want to buy this, but only if I can fix the problem myself. Judging from your post, this isn't common is it? And you probably don't know of a simple fix for this?

If you've not cluttered up the phone with you own data yet, (Or just back everything up if you have), then follow these steps (In order if the previous does not work):

1. Try a soft reset (*#7780#) - This will restore the phones default settings

2. Try hard resetting (*#7370#) - This will erase all data on the phone memory itself and restore to it's 'fresh' form

3. Upgrade/Reinstall the firmware - This is the most drastic, but an almost certain fix. You can do this using Nokia Software Updater

Unless it's a physical hardware problem, then these steps will fix it

Couldn't he just dare open it himself and sort the keypad out, if it's a physical issue.

I don't know if you can do that, i've never wanted to open my phone myself, so i've never had a look on how. I watch my cousin pull the n95 in horror. I couldn't dare.

Follow-up:

I tried the resets posted in post #4, and the problem still persists. At this point, I'm convinced this is a hardware issue. I have since returned the phone to my service provider.

Thank you all for your help and assistance.

Since it could still be under warranty you could just take it to a Nokia Service Centre and get them to fix it for free. As long as you have your receipt of purchase, then your golden.

Been there, done that

Hey there man,

I had EXACTLY the same problem you had. Took it back to my local Nokia care centre and they fixed it up for me.

The repair notes were:
Mechanical repair (no soldering)
Replaced bottom cover antenna assy, cleaned realigned all contacts, blah blah blah

It didn't cost me a thing, and took about 2 days before I got it back.
