Major Problem (Phone Locking-Up)

I got my dad an N95 for christmas. He has been whinging that it is useless but I just put this down to him being old.
Eventually I have taken the phone from him. The main problem was the phone going blank when trying to take a picture.
I noticed it was on V12 so I upgraded firmware to V20. Now teh phone is even worse. When you can get it to boot it just locks up and the screen freezes. When you turn the phone off (can only be doen by removing battery) I notice that you can still see a faded ouline of the last image that was on teh screen before locking up.
To add to all this hassle the phone was purchased in the UK but we live in Portugal so I cant exactly pop down to the high street to complain.
Does anybody have ANY suggestions as to how I can fix this myself.

i reckon you should reinstall the firmware, it is v20 right?.
Well it doesn't matter what firmware it is, but reisntalling it should solve the problem, it does to many problems too.

Re-installed V20 more than once now. Still no luck, phone locks up like crazy....doin my head in big time now!

I assume you've tried the hard reset? Sounds really odd! Take it there ain't a service centre in Portugal?

did u trying contacting nokia...maybe you can ship it to them..

Do you have a memory card? If so, did you format it before updating the firmware?

There's a faint possibility that software on the card is trying to access the altered operating system in the phone.
