Should i trade in my 2 month old n95 and get an iphone?

Pretty much, all i want in a phone is a phone, and a decent media player. I had my mind set on getting an iphone, and then i found it had no native video capture, mms, and a load of other things a phone should have (which can be "fixed" with third party apps, not to mention the SDK which has just been released, so its all going to get better from now on).

So obviously, when i laid my eyes upon the almost twice the price, feature packed N95 8GB, i just had to get one. But since ive had it, ive lived my life in fear. What if it breaks, what if it drops, what if if it gets lost. What if im just that bit too rough with it? What if that work day is just a little too rainy? Thats almost $1000 NZD down the toilet. I would be in trouble then

To be honest, i have only used MMS and the media player on the n95. Nothing else. Ive installed boat loads of apps, most of which have never been opened once. Ive installed heaps of games, and again, ive only played one or two.

So, every day, i get dressed for work, walk over to the table, and pick up my 1 grand hunk of plastic, put it in my pocket and think, "im probably not even going to use this today, but i may loose $1000". I wonder, is the evil apple iphone really so bad? It does everything i want in a phone, its half the price of what i currently have, and it still has a lot of hack-ability. Did i make the wrong choice? Should i trade in my n95 while its still in 1 piece and get a iphone?

P.s. some things to note
-I have had a ipod touch, and i was very happy with it (the interface, the size, the media capabilities, the range of apps, etc). I also liked the web browsing experience (sure, the screens little, but the easy scrolling/zooming method makes it more useful than some other internet browsing devices.). I sold the itouch and my then current phone for the n95.

Sorry its a mouthful, but im really stuck here.

The current prices here are
8GB n95=1099 from shop or 1500$ from vodafones shop
Iphone 8gb (currently not available from vodafone or retail stores)-$550 second hand, and unlocked for vodafone use, and 700 new and unlocked
Iphone 16GB i will probably get this as i will sell my n95 for this much-900 brand new unlocked. 750-800 second hand
Iphone headphone jack adapter-$8

I say if it feels good do it... you already know you like the interface...

Just remember that it doesn't support MMS... Also might be worth waiting for a bit, Vodafone got the deal with iphone in Aus (and I assume NZ as well)

yeah the iphoens officially coming to vodafone nz, but its just going to go up in price then. I think i will get in before it happens. I find vodafone firmware to be ugly and bloated anyway. Not to mention their crappy logo all over it...

If it feels right to you then you should do it.

I'm just curious about how you feel about some of the things you give away:

For me I couldn't do without GPS, I use it for guidance (Garmin, excellent), Sports Tracker (training), geotagging....

Have you never used the GPS? You do know that voice guidance is now available for the updated Nokia Maps for NZ (check geekzone.co.nz for details)? You might want to give it a little try before passing it up...

The camera is another thing I'd find too hard to pass up, I love having one on me all the time - you're not much into that either?

Finally, I couldn't cope with the neutered bluetooth - no A2DP, no modem, no filetransfer...

As I said, if its right for you then you should absolutely do it, I just wonder whether you're really given the N95 its due...

Tell me if I've got it wrong, but both the N95 and the iPhone are current hot and desirable items - both for fashionistas and techo-geeks... are you being honest when you tell us about your simple needs? It sounds to me as though you are limiting your purchasing options, not by the functionality you want, but by the style of the gadgets you hanker after. If this is the case, you are always going to be toting an expensive bit of wizardry that will have cost a lot of money and could get damaged or stolen.

@ NZtechfreak
I have garmin mobile XT on it, and i find the gps to be a very nice feature, and would be even better if i ever used it. I installed gmobile xt to see what it could do, and i played around with it, and now its sitting there, forgotten about.
I definately like the camera on the n95, but again, i rarely use it.
Bluetooth file sharing i think i will miss, but thats what a usb cable is for.
I just feel its a waste of a lot of talent having it, if im not going to use anything on it.

@ john_g
Im not buying the iphone for the name or the style though. I really do like its interface, its text input method, its media player and its overall robust metallic feel. I just plain like what apple has done with it.

Fair enough. Sounds like you'll enjoy the iPhone.

I think it'd be better for you to wait for the 3G iPhone to come out if you end up deciding to give up the N95.
