Exclamation VoIP removed from new devices due to the platform development

Some good VoIP sleuthing

TechCraver did some digging of their own to find out more about what's happening with VoIP and Nokia. They ended up talking with Truphone to see how they have been impacted by the removal of the SIP client on two Nokia devices. I totally agree that the silent and unexpected way Nokia made this change on these two devices has caused most of the confusion (though some others have helped).

And folks are starting to see that it's not a VoIP thing after all, but an issue with the platform development (as mentioned on Mobile Phone Development). Both TechCraver and Mobile Phone Development hope that as Symbian becomes more open, hopefully there will be some transparency in the platform development that will avoid these surprises.

I must admit, I've never been that eager about VOIP.

I have a really good tariff at the moment, which gives me more free minutes that I'd ever need.

I've yet to find anyone who uses VOIP on a regular basis, does anyone on here ?

I don't either, but read on here that some members do, and have even commented on future devices, and firmwares having VoIP.

I just got back from a holiday in Europe and I gave my VOIP a workout.

My Voipstunt account stopped working as soon as I paid the 10 Euro to activate the unlimited calls and I couldn't fix it so I reinstalled Truphone because of their new 1.5 cent/min rate to the US and Canada.

It's gotten much better than before although you can tell that it still messes up the native SIP software. There's now an option in the menu for "Truphone Off", which solves all the persistent connection problems that it had before.

Now that most hotels have wifi, a decent voip contract means you can make reasonable phone calls anywhere in the world.

I also use it regularly during the day as I don't have that many daytime minutes on my contract.

It's not free anymore, but 1.5 c/min is almost nothing.

Just in the depths of the factory where there is poor Mobile coverage but plenty of WiFi. Regular, but small usage admittedly.

One of our senior guys uses it at home, where he has no ceverage. Works quite well.

That said, I use Fring more often, which is kinda VOIP-ish.

FON this week hit 1,000,000 users and over 400,000 AP's world wide. That's a hell of a lot of growth. There will come a point when we can wonder down the street, hopping from AP to AP making free reliable calls over the Web.

We won't be so reliant on networks.

It's Broke?

Did you know that your Nokia comes with a 2 year warranty? Did you know that Carphone Warehouse are Nokia Repair Centres?
Damage from normal use: wobbly slider, broken keys, quiet earpiece etc... will be repaired for free, and usually the same day if you take it to a big store!

Aye, I can see that in the future. With the plummeting costs of broadband and the more availability for public wifi. VOIP might just be the next big thing...

I use voip on a regular basis. Here in Canada, the international calling rates are pathetic with Rogers. I'd get a monthly bill averaging around $500 (highest has been over $1000), when calling the middle east. But after setting up my voip account, my average monthly bill is around $100. i.e all my phone calls on rogers, and the amount of money i spend refilling my voip account.

Aye. VOIP is great for free. But the moment you start paying for it, you expect quality. And one thing that nails VOIP is available bandwidth. I use it in the house to call people, but if I start downloading a huge file, I get lots of clips, boings and echoes. QOS is the key to VOIP taking off big style and that's what costs the money.
