Exclamation How Nokia, and S60 can save the planet

Spotted this article over on pestaola which hightlights some simple steps Nokia could make to help save the planet, from using micro CD's, and business card cd's in their packaging, USB charging across all devices, and so on.

There is always a little something that can be done to make things better, smaller and consume less energy. If we’re talking about Nokia with a production of somewhere between 1 to 3 millions mobile phones a day the chance to make a difference is huge. A few suggestions on how Nokia and S60 can save the planet.

Get rid of the CDs. Start using mini CDs to load distribute software or even better load software inside the microSD card. Using mini CDs will reduce the packaging size, thus the materials needed for producing the box. Not to mention more phones shipping around the globe using the same containers and tracks. By the time a smartphone is out an updated version of the Nokia Suite or Nokia update is out there already. Use the absolutely minimum software on the microSD (installers only) cards. People will download the apps or plug the phone on a computer and use it as a disk. Include a 10 steps Quick Start Guide printed inside the box. Make the inner box part of the manual, quick start guide experience.

Increase the price and spend the extra money for reducing C02 emissions, like We:Offset application does. When spending more than €350 for a Nseries multimedia computer, adding an extra €2 on top of it still feels the same. Spend the extra money for planting a tree or somehow reduce the CO2 emissions produced by making the phone. Think We:Offset but offline.

Start building all phones for charging via USB, it’s late 2008 already. USB charging is cool, convenient and doesn’t need a charger (duh!) for sucking extra energy from the power grid. Missing 10min from my laptop’s uptime it’s trivial, plus i can always balance energy loss by reducing laptop’s brightness.

Program S60 to more aggressive power saving profiles by default. When Light times out screen is pretty much useless (anyone out there being able to read the time or see the tiny SMS icon?). Force S60 to Light time-out and Power saver time-out at the same time. Longer battery life most probably means less charging time if not better user experience.

Tweak the hell out of S60 for power saving. Every firmware update coming out promises greater performance, increased battery life and less bugs. Make power management a priority and plan a firmware ahead before releasing a phone. Again, longer battery life probably means less charging time if not better user experience.

Bring up bells and whistles when battery is full. My N82 displays a short message for like 2 seconds (Battery full) when it is fully charged. On the other hand, my N810 running Maemo displays a message until i unplug the charger (something like Battery is full, please unplug the charger to save energy). It’s easy to implement and frankly speaking it gets annoying after a while seeing the message on the screen. Name it warning. Make it annoying (beeping, blinking, something). . Most people don’t like to be annoyed and when they do, most of the times do something about it.

Sure thing, Nokia connects millions of people via S60 and it will continue to do so in a better, more power efficient way.

Do they mean turn down brightness, energy use etc when using your laptop and charge phone at same time thus using only one power point because phone is usb charge capable.I guess this is an energy share option.

Some great ideas there, and on the face of it, fairly easy to implement.

USB charging would certainly be a most useful standard option for Nokia handsets - it has been around for a long while on other manufacturers' handsets.

The power sharing comes in by USB charging the handset whilst using the laptop, rather than switching on the laptop to charge the phone only.

I USB charge a Solio Solar Charger, and use this to charge my Nokia.

Do people actually really want to follow these ?

It's amazing how, the local councils near me. Are pushing " going green" We recycle everything, we get fined if we don't. We get taxed on our motors which are not as efficient as brand new models. Which no one can afford in the current financial situation. We get taxed regardless of how often we drive the vehicle. When government vehicles, all forced vehicles are still running on high octane fuels and large, un economical diesel engines.

We're told to take our TV's off stand by, unplug things when not in the house. Only use the water we need, run showers instead of baths. As it will all "help"

Yes the government offices, are running electrical set ups, where by they are regulated, and cannot turn off their PC systems. Which run 365 days a year.

There is no restriction on company's electrical usage, as I know from my office. Who has a 500+ PC Network, all running 24/7.

There is NO problem with packaging and material now. If it is disposed of correctly. So the fact ignorant people cannot recycle non biodegradable materials. They go into over load and try and ban it all together.

Rather than telling people what they can and cannot do, why not target the recycling MORE to LTD company's, and those who are chucking out major amounts of refuse. And stop taxing and fining the working class.

Sorry.

Oh dear IJM, you got me started... ;)

I could rant on all day, but what I do find extremely stupid, is packaging.

Depending on where you live, its a lottery as to what can be taken away.

I dont bother, I just save it all up and go to the tip to recycle it, since they dont recycle certain things on the bi weekly pickup.

But I end up chucking loads away anyway. Even at the tip, its plastic bottles only. So anything else (butter tubs, yogurt pots etc) has to go in the bin.

And theres so many things I dont know what to do with. Pringles tubes. Cardboard, metal (a ring around the bottom, dont know if it still has it) and plastic. Oh, and a kind of paper foil as the cover.

There are so many items like this that I dont know what to do with.

What we need, is categories. Every bit of packaging should have a category which corrosponds to what you do with it.

So what do I do with my pringles tube? Ah, category 'E', stick it in there.

Would it cost a lot to start? Of course it would, but in the long run its going to be a **** sight cheaper than when we run out of landfill space.

Oh, and new homes. Why in the hell isn't there more regulations? All there currently is, is some insulation and I think water saving requirements.

Wheres the checks for viability of solar heating? (Solar power is pointless in this country).

All sorts of things can be done for new houses, funded by the government - thus ultimatly, us. I wouldnt mind paying - Im getting taxed billions for a load of other crap anyway - it would certainly be worthwhile.

Especialy for the UK, who now has most of its power run by the French who are not restricted in what they can charge.

We can blame the iron lady for that.

When she was advised to build storage for the energy we generate in the summer. She didn't. So year why not sell it to the French dirt cheap in summer. Then let them sell it us back in Winter when there is high demand for what ever they want.

Over a barrell on energy. Over a barrell on fuel....

Bah. That's another can of worms.
