rejoice nokia users we finally get the omap3 600mhz processor read how good it is

ive been using a phone with the omap3 600mhz processor in for a few days now and boy does it make a difference to the arm11 clocked at 434mhz from the n97 and other nokia phones

for a read on just how good the omap3 is and what to expect from the processor in the new n900 please read the review below of what it is capable of in the omnia hd

please note even though it is based on the omnia hd alot of it will be tied in with the n900 as it is a hardware review and talks alot about the omap3 and the differences between the n97

it also mentions the difference ram makes and also how the omap3 can handle high qualtiy gps chips

its a really good read and very intresting

hope you enjoy it and it makes you look forwards to the n900 even more

Samsung Omnia HD i8910 Review @ My-Symbian.com

edit
summary

''To recap, what we get is a high-performance mobile computer with a processor delivering up to 2000 Dhrystone MIPS (actually slightly less at 600 MHz, but still within the 1000-2000 MIPS range), i.e. more than average Pentium-III processor, with powerful OpenGL ES 2.0 capable hardware 2D/3D acceleration quite sufficient for a full-featured mobile game console and high-end multimedia player and recorder. Texas Instruments' technical specifications mention performance increase of over 3x (and over 4x in multimedia applications) compared to older processors used in other S60 phones''

nokia should have jumped on this processor a long time ago :-) it rocks :-)

if the snapdragon 1ghz is even better then mobile technoalagy is about to take a massive leap forwards

yep, agreed, the Omnia HD is a nice bit of kit, superb display, sensitive touchscreen, plays almost every video format that you throw at it and once clipped in to cheap plastic rubberised casing, the bane of fingermarks are gone.
But... Unfortunately the inbuilt speakers are very poor, not much better than the N97, so I returned it... Pity because it had almost everything else that I needed, guess I've been spoiled by the 5800 audio. :(

spook out of intrest did you use the code to enter the sound menu and tweek the settings of the sound

i have put most of the audi settings values to +6 where they were zero and the difference is very noticeable

you can change the values for loudpspeaker volume for calls and music , video playback volume levels via headphones and speakers , bluetooth volume for playback of audio , theres loads in there

then you save them and it saves to the rom so even a hard format wont wipe the settings

i used this guide How to Change Volume in Samsung i8910 Omnia HD

i then took it abit further and adjusted a few more sound levels like bluetooth and stuff

it has defo made a difference and the speaker volume is easily as loud as my n95-1 and id say nearly 5800 as well , you can even hear little tiny bass coming out of the speakers , there is definite definition to the sound coming from them unlike the n97 i owned which was much more tinny , it reminds me of the n95-1 really when listening to it , its defently no worse and much better then the n97

iam sure you did try the codes i remember you asking about them and me posting a link to omnia hd users

iam really enjoying it to be honest , not one problem really , if iam fussy the battery meter looses the 1st few bars quickly then holds the last few for an extra long time , kind of the opposite to nokia s60 that seem to show the battery as full for ages then drop really quickly

i think this may be a problem with the new italian firmware

really impressed with the omap3 it makes such a difference to the user experience it really does

iam sure many n900 users will enjoy using the omap3 inside the n900 and with the 1gb virtual ram the n900 defently has some potenial behind it wether its exploited is another thing

from what that review says the omap 3 and on board gfx are capable of near game console like graphics and producing pentium 3 levels of performance add that with maemo a full linux o/s and this could be exciting times but iam not being a beta tester this time :-)

Buxz.... I was asked about altering the audio parameters before and I explained that I daren't as the device was from a source that may have been very fussy about returns...

A couple of questions...
After modifying, is the quality (not necessarily the volume) of the audio output from the speakers as good as the N95 or the 5800?

Another thing, at one time it was believed that the device had an inactive fm transmitter and work was underway by hackers to try and activate it. At one point I even read that Samsung themselves were due to activate it. I contacted Samsung technical about this and was told that the Omnia HD doesn't have the hardware installed to even enable the fm transmitter.

Have you any info on this, beyond what I've put above?

I think I've read that phones with fm transmitters are illegal in France and the unit I had was appently sourced from there, although I didn't know this when I ordered it.

I was wondering if the official uk version DOES have the transmitter hardware in it... :)

i cant give you any more info about the omnia hd fm transmitter mate , i have found samsung sources that say it does have the hardware but it is in table format not an actual press announcement

Does the Samsung i8910 have a FM Transmitter?

the table can be found in that link mate , it does show the i8910 as having a fm transmitter and is from the samsung Mobile Innovator website , an offical samsung page

however nokia have made errors in tables like this so iam not sure , it certainly hasnt been activated yet as far as i know

regarding the speakers and audio output ive just listened to it via the speakers and it is really loud mate , no two ways about it , my girlfriend is nodding her head agreeing she noticed the difference before i done the codes and after and mentioned it wads louder

it puts my n96 to shame it sounds like it is pre amped running through ok speakers , it really really reminds me of the 5800 or n95-1

they are the best phone speakers ive had and i would say that this i8910 with the +6 values added in the sound menus to the right setting is right up there with them

like i say i adjusted pretty much all the settings i could by following that guide , you adjust the same value name in each setting depending on wether its speaker or headset so its quite simple and takes about 2-5 mins to get used to what setting you have to do

iam listening to it now at volume seven out of ten and its louder then my telly which isnt quiet , if i turn it up to ten it is loud very loud and the sound has definitan to it ie you notice the bass and mid range of the speakers not just the treble like the n97

if you think about it spook +6 would make quite a difference to the volume levels of the handset so imagine how loud it was then think about adding +6 to the gain , it makes quite a difference

i know the i8910 has a dsp chip with virtual 5.1 surround sound capabillites as well i can listen to it comfortably in a room with the tv off on level 5 if i need it louder then i have 5 more notches of sound level so it should be comfortable in the most testing enviroments like crowded places etc

its a shame you didnt get to test the codes out spook after your dissapointment in the latest nokia speakers i think you would have been pleased with the omnia hds after the codes

its not just the speakers when you do the codes you get to change the headset values too , i have nice set of sony with 13.5mm drivers and you can really here the difference with the codes applied , the sound that comes out of them know is really really loud

as a music phone its performing very well i would honestly say that it was on par with the 5800

i havent used a 5800 for a long time but i remeber how good the speakers were and how much better they made my alarm sound and sat nav and loudspeaker sound , they were loud clear and have made newer phones sound dissapointing , the 5800 speakers sounded like they were allmost preamped and the i8910 has the same sort of power to them

if you can check out one with the codes applied

can any other i8910 user confirm the sound levels of the speakers after the codes applied

cheers sorry for the long post :-)

ps
i found the speaker placement to be quite good as well especially if you flip it into landscape

check one out with the codes spook , if the speakers were putting you off then you got to check one with the codes applied , if you was in the market for a phone could you not try the i8910 from amazon test the codes then if no good use their 30 day money back :-) thats if amazon sell it of course :-)

ps2
quality has not deritated the sound seems to have just been amplified , if i play a bad quality mp3 back then it will sound worse because the sound is louder and the sound is harsh due to it being a bad quality and being played loud , if i play high quality music back or just normal mp3s with good levels ie not rubbsih low quality mixtapes or downloaded from you tube then the sound is just louder and remains good quality

i have found that on some songs i have had to turn it down a notch as the sound was harsh , but this is because the mp3 was of low quality and had bad levels and it would have sounded the same loud on a denon or misson seperates hifi let alone a phone

so if you use mp3s that are ok then the sound will remain good but just be amplifed by +6

but rubbsih quality tracks will also be amplified by +6

sorry again for the long post mate feel free to tidy it up :-) hope it helps and sorry i couldnt find more on the fm transmitter if it is in there its been dormant along time but then was the n95 accelemeter i suppose :-)

Thanks very much for all the info buxz... It's much appreciated.

From what you say, it seems that I may have been unable to give it a fair trial.

I had an N900 on order, but as I'm currently a guest of the NHS for a while, I've had to cancel the order. However I know someone who IS getting one and as you may guess, one of my main points of interest is the speaker output. Sadly, from examining the strip-down pics of it, the speakers seem to be identical to the N97 type so I don't expect them to even come close to the 5800 quality... But we shall see...

You've certainly caused me to reconsider the Omnia HD and I may well end up with one yet!

How do you find it's compatibility with commercial S60v5 programs though? I found several that were important to me that my unaltered version would't run... LCG Jukebox being a particularly vital program to me.

Sorry to pester you to this extent old son!

The HD looks to have quite a following. One thing I hadn't realised was that it's possible to flash a custom rom. I thought being s60 it would be locked down to the same extent Nokia's are.

Ok, you have my interest... Especially as my 5800 has crashed AGAIN while writing this post!
