Wow...such basic phone functionality missing?
It is to my surprise that the N95 doesn't support contact search from the standby screen just by typing numbers. Apparently, to obtain this type of functionality, you need to add SkyQuiKey, a 3rd party app. As I understand, the basic functionality of the N series is that when you start typing numbers from the standby screen, only numbers are entered and contacts aren't searched based on the combination entered. This surprises me as I consider that type of functionality critical to being a good phone device critical. Any device supporting a robust PIM database should have a built-in search function.
As I understand, the E series has this function? I am curious as to why the N95 does not have this type of functionality built-in. Have I been misinformed?

I thought the idea of having contacts was so you dont have to remember numbers?
Why not just set the center joypad button to go to contacts then key in first few letters of the person you wish to call? Far easier than remembering the first 3 or 4 digits of all your contacts phone numbers. Thats probably why they decided to leave that function out because its pointless nowadays.. Anyway, thats just how I see it.. Regards, Rob.

Here's what I mean: All About Symbian Review: SkyeQuiKey For such a powerful phone device, I am surprised this functionality is not built in to the N95.

As long as you type the start of a name into the inbuilt phone book, you will get the exact same result (E.g. 'Joe' or 'Ran' would bring up 'Joel Randel', whereas 'Andel' would not)

You can also search the contacts by typing the phone numbers.... for this you need to search contacts in the inbuilt search. When you start typing a number is keeps sorting the contacts which have that string of numbers in the beginning.
The inbuilt search feature is pretty close to most of the desktop searches we find on our PCs. It does help to find almost all types of files stored on the phone Last edited by docsinghal; 12-31-2007 at 04:42 AM. |
