My Lumia 900 is on its way

To shift this series of smartphones coming their way to the Nokia world, yes, I'm waiting for the Lumia 900's launch here in Germany..

Previously, decided to save cash and wait for Nokia's WP8 flagship, but I really can't live with the HD7 anymore.. For a tech enthusiast like me, it's a really outdated gadget by now!
And then, it has some major shortmings, most obviously and disturbingly is the camera of course which I can't even use for basic stuff like making a legible photo of some paper work as a reminder or to upload to social network.. It's beyond me how HTC did manage to come up with such a horrible camera really!! I'd take even an EDoF over this!! That's not to mention the camera button that needs some finger muscle training courses to get to use it!! And of course the ultra terrible display..
But it was one faithful handset that really grew on me with time and surprising me with its reliability as I dropped it big on many occasions (wasn't meant to be my primary phone when I first got it), yet showed no obvious scratches, and no faults!! Despite the squeaking and flimsy battery cover, and funny hard plastic sides..

When I got this phone, it was just because Nokia turned to WP. It was a real bargain, and I thought I would give it a go and sell it in few weeks when I'm done with it.. Main purpose was to get to know WP of course and decide between it and Android.. However, and specially with the Mango announcement back then, WP amazed me! And the thought of this excellent and highly promising piece of software blended with Nokia's hardware and some popular useful services of theirs stuck in my mind and kept me from making the Android jump despite being tempted by trying a GSII for a week..

Anyway, now it's time to jump into the Lumia wagon.. And the Lumia 900 isn't really the ultimate smartphone out there, but for me, it fits my needs better than Android does, and it has its own big unique pluses anyway.. Specially the fact that I'm totally sold by W8 and heading into a W8 convertible/hybrid at the end of the year..

Early adopters always make big calls, and make some sacrificers and of course some risks as I might end up joining the Droid army in case this whole project doesn't work well for MS and Nokia after all..
But totally ready for the adventure.

I love Windows Phone. Absolutely love what Nokia are doing since switching to WP, and have big faith into where they are heading to..

Enough for this post. Looking forward to review the beast when I finally get my hands on it.

No fan of your general posting style (sure thats not a surprise to you).

Having said that, I do enjoy some of your posts, and have to admit to being quite interested in the 900.
On paper its (for me) the most interesting Windows phone due out, and one of the reasons, I still like to keep abreast of whats happening in Nokialand.

Having said that it still falls short in some areas of what I currently want in a handset, although thats more to do with MS dictating some of the specs.

So in short this may be an interesting handset in terms of pulling together interest and sales.

Long term it may be seen as the turning point for Nokia and Microsoft, as a pc user (Windows 7) - the thought of having a phone and pc on the same eco system is appealing.

Then again more and more 'joe public' are going down the road of smartphone in pocket during the day, and tablet on sofa in the evening.
Consequently, many people have already jumped into the Android or IOS ecosystem, so it may be too late, or take a long time for Microsoft to become a major contender in that area.

Let's see the review first and then pass judgement on posting style. I would be quite interested to see whether the predominantly hardware problems which have plagued the US version (purple screen, loud rattle when vibrating originating from the camera module, non-responding capacitive keys, etc.) will transfer over to the global one as well.

LOL, sorry but I know what FM's posting style is already - don't need to see anymore to make my mind up - future posts will either confirm what I already think, or show change.
Thats not a criticism, FM's posting style is a reflection of his personality, just as mine is a reflection of my personality.

That said, I will be interested to read his user's review - pure and simple.

Contrary to what certain individuals on here say, people clearly do like wp and the lumias....doing quite well in the US

Of course there are people who like WP and the Lumias. Let's hope there are enough of them to keep Nokia alive until WP matures.

Off topic, but I hope you are finally happy with your 4th replacement Lumia 800 ?

I'd love to say yes but I sent it back the other day....onto my fifth
Not doing the WP name any good but hopefully this will be the last time. My third would have been fine I think had the wifi worked so hopefully they will test the next one I get to make sure it's OK (Y)

    something like that haha

Terrible battery life was the main problem. Wifi not working was the second. first one I had had both issues. Second I had for a good few months before I got sick of it. Third was ok battery except wifi threw a hissy fit. (Seen a few of those on here recently ... ) Fourth was losing too much just sat there. Lost about %50 over night then got the latest update that was meant to fix standby life but it didn't really because the way I saw it it was defective anyway...pretty sure there wasn't a software bug responsible for losing 50%

Better and bigger screen as well as front facing camera.. But no reasons to upgrade from a Lumia 800 of course..
Actually the main reason I didn't get an 800 and stuck to the HD7/N8 combi is lack of cash as I spent much on other gadgets last Christmass..

But sold the N8 recently as it's hassle to keep using two phones! And the HD7 alone isn't enough.. Mainly due to the useless camera..

And by this way, I'm looking forward to keep the 900 beyond this year as I'll be investing in a W8 PC at the end of the year, and no room for another smartphone to come in.. So I hope it won't disappoint me as I obviously putting high exptations on it!

HOWEVER It will be a great phone, It hit the UK yesturday and my Local Phones4u was sold out.. so thats saying something LOL
Yes I read that.. But still no sign of it in Germany!! I find it weird as previously Nokia flagships were always released simultaneously in the major European markets..
Do you have any idea about the prices in UK?? And what contracts is it going with?

This would be the one big point I'm fearing at the moment.. And this is the part where I mentioned above about early adopters' sacrifices..
Hope though the extra wait to be released over here help get rid of these early glitches the handset suffered at..

A bit pricey cf. the competition, but no doubt prices will fall quickly. I see the biggest problem with the Lumia 900 is ironically the 808. The 808 is a killer-feature from Nokia which, to me, makes other Nokia devices seem like treading water until it rolls out on Windows Phone. Roll on the erm, Lumia 908!

From a UK perspective, the lack of 4G is a problem which may dent it's prospects here compared to the rip roaring success it's having in the USA, but there's not much Nokia can do about that.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to your review, FM.

UK's prices are a bit too high atm I think..
But also these are its very early days.. Not available everywhere yet. Not even on Amazon!!
Amazon.co.uk lists it on pre-order for 450 pounds with a release date of June the 30th!! The date is scary, but I think they'll change it once Nokia fully release it in Europe.. Amazon.de doesn't list it at all yet.

Surprisingly though, on At&t in the US, it's available for only 450$ sim-free!!
I know prices change depending on the country based on many factors, and one can't really compare prices directly by converting currencies, but that's only 355€ or 285 pounds!! If one hits the US and gets it VAT free as well, that would be one delicious price!!

    @Bubba

As to the PureView 808, I don't think it will pose any threat on Lumia sales in Europe! Symbian is dead in the old continent! WP is already selling more than Symbian in Europe! Just imagine that and you'll know that the 808 despite that big feature doesn't stand a chance!!

Reason is the average smartphone user these days doesn't prioritise the camera factor like before!! Everyone would tell you now when shopping for a smartphone that it should be enough camera to make acceptable photos.. Facebook and stuff..
And even for photography enthusiasts, it's still a smartphone they'll purchasing, and the 808 as a smartphone is a considered a failure! A big no go! Actually only hard core Nokia fans or current Symbian users who are not in for the change yet and people who can afford the 808 as a secondary gadget for photography will be getting it..

We'll see how many of these are left by end of Q3 according to the sales figures..

But add PureView to the Lumia line-up and it will be a big bonus and a big differentatior to the competition.. And consequently a potential for a sales hit.. This is how it is..

Finally the Lumia 900 is starting to pop up..

O2 are listing it within the phones coming soon.. No word on the pricing though.. Availability they say start of June..

It also appeared on Amazon.de with avaibility date of 30 May!! And only for 499€.. That's promising to say the least..

I hope it would go on o2 for 480€..

If you get it on a 2 year contract it is $99. My sister was paid $1 to get one. She bought it for $99 but was given a $100 credit to compensate for the early software error that some of the US models had. So far she is really happy with it and she claims it has the best battery life of any smartphone she has used or her friends have.

Got mine yesterday from phones4u in the uk. Although I am still getting used to it I have to say I am very pleased and think its miles better than my Nokia 5800 which is what I had previously. Only problem I have encountered so far is getting the phone to use the ringtones I have downloaded. I have read the manual and done what it says but still can get the phone to use downloaded tones only ones that are already on the phone.

The Lumia 900 finally went officially on pre-order at Amazon.de today in all three colors for 499€..
My guess it will be released next week everywhere with a release price between 450€ and 480€.. Similar to the Lumia 800's release price..

On o2 it's still listed as coming soon at start of June with no pre-order price!
It seems it will go directly on sale without pre-order..

I'm hoping to put my hands on one in the next week..

Amazon.de today posted an availability date of 11th June.. That's next Monday..
It seems this date will be the release day of the Lumia 900 in Germany overall..
If not, it should be available somewhere on in the next week though..

Ok the wait is starting to get frustrating!!

The phone is shipping now directly through Amazon in Cyan and Black for 505€.. In white it's available there through third-party sellers for 540€..

Operators and local stores don't have it yet, but it's on its way.. Should be arriving very soon..
However, on o2 where I was planning to get it, it'll be available only in white as a start! Which is a big problem as I can't own a white phone..

Anyway, hopefully it will get fully released next week at least so that at least I can get a hands-on and look for the right deal.. Right now pre-orders are not any good..
And I'm not getting it from Amazon with one payment..

According to the help forum of T-Mobile Germany they will not be offering the Lumia 900 since it cannot be upgraded to Windows Phone 8 when it is released in Q4 2012. This is the page, scroll down to the post from Meike from 12 days ago (vor 12 Tagen):

Regarding the Lumia 900 as mentioned in the other thread, plans came to a halt..

I really don't mind the 900's specs, as it's clearly underspecced compared to the competition..
But now I'll need to know more about WP 7.8 before making final decision to get the Lumia 900 or wait for Q4..

The price is a big factor. I won't get the 900 for 500€.. It should go less. And I think the price will soon go on a free fall..
Second thing is Skype! No Skype integration no 900..

These are the things I'm looking for now..
