That image is fan art. It was photoshopped together from various Nokia and S/E devices then posted on the Nokia developer forums. It was never intended to be a hoax, rumored upcoming device or otherwise- though it has since been the topic of many blogs, forums etc. Even Symbian-Guru.com fell for it quite recently. It has also been listed for "pre-order" on several websites. It's been rumored to be the N96, N97 and N99- obviously none of these claims are true.

But the genesis of it is very clear- it's fan art. Not even a concept from Nokia.

edit-
LOL! Just read the link you posted, mate. Engadget even fell for this one. It always amazes me when the 'big' fellas fall for this crap. It was well known at the time to be fan art- not a "fake", hoax or otherwise. It was clearly known to be a photoshopped device when it was initially released on the Internet. Sillyness. It really makes me chuckle when I see this business at the large tech sites like engadget. I'm amazed that there wasn't one person that said, "Uh, yeah... here's the thing on that..."

it's nice to see all the concepts flying around but I'd really like to see what Nokia is actually working on. I'd like to see something about the form factor of the N95, I just like a phone that has some weight to it

We'll be seeing a few new things from Nokia at the Mobile World Congress (formerly 3GSM) next month in Barcelona. No doubt there will be a few announcements of new devices and we'll be seeing some demos of new technology that Nokia is working on (touch...)

Two words: "cheap" and "tacky" spring to mind when I think of the N96.

What a huge disappointment, I'm so glad I didn't hold on, and went out and bought the N82 instead.

What's the deal with the lack of 3D acceleration?

Yeah- 3D acceleration... I don't really know- perhaps the decision to go with another processor was battery life concerns. Not sure what the efficiency is of the processor that the N96 is using.

Cheap and tacky- yes, I think I had that same concern before I held the device- and am somewhat comforted that it feels better than the N82, but it does still feel too light- and I dare say, yes... could be perceived to have a cheap feel. Just too light and plasticy. :S

AAS Feature: Nokia N96 Hands-on Preview

All About Symbian reports the N96 has a new chipset that doesn't have 3D acceleration.
Instead, it has hardware H.264 acceleration as well as a dedicated audio DSP that is better than the one found in the N91.
In my opinion, those additions are far more useful than a 3D accelerator.
