5800 price discrepancy
Ok, so Nokia themselves said it would be available for 279 Euros before taxes.
When I saw this I thought 'wow'. Then thought how is that possible. Because, quite simply, its not. Unless they subsidise every handset. To put it into perspective, lets compare it with a similar Nokia. Best example in fact, is my E66. GPS, Wifi, bluetooth, 3.2 cam. Processor and memory will certainly not be less, at least equal. So, the current price on Nokia for the E66 is £319 inc VAT. £271 without VAT, which is 320 Euros. Dispite the similarities, the 5800 has a number of things over the E66: Large screen, touch. Dual LED flash (not single) Latest touch screen OS from Nokia (S60 V5) Now, how can a phone like that, cost 39 Euros less than the E66? I cry foul, theres no way that Nokia made that mistake. And lets not forget that the 5800 has the comes with music service. The 5800 has come for sale on the Italian Nokia site for 429 Euros. Unsuprisingly much much more than the 279 they said it would. I understand prices sometimes change, but this one was totally unrealistic and not given out too long ago, it was already well through the production process, if not finished. |

This is the case in Spain as well; the 5800 will retail for 429 euro- but that's not just for the phone. Apparently each country is able to sell the device bundled with whatever services they wish, such as services that aren't selling so well in that country. In this instance, the 5800 is being sold with a mandatory €100 music store voucher and a three month subscription to Nokia Maps. Pretty lousy, IMO- but that's what's going on.
To clarify, the €279 price for the device still stands, it is just being bundled with services. Word is that when January rolls around, we'll see the 5800 without the bundles for 279 Euro.

It seems strange that Nokia seems to be intentionally missing the UK Xmas market with the 5800, unless of course they're desperate to off-load the current "FlagShip" phone and hoping that folks will buy the N96 instead, rather than wait, despite it's useless TV receiver and it's other shortcomings.
Or maybe they can't yet meet the demand for a mid-range next-generation device? Perhaps the guy in charge of the Nokia Farnborough test-lab sat on it and it failed the test?

But will there be a version without 'services' in January, or soon after?
All S60's now come with 3 months Maps now, have done for some time. If they suddenly drop the price by over 100 euros for no apperent reason, a lot of people are going to be very annoyed. And rightly so. Remember the iphone price decrease? I can't see it dropping to 279 without taxes myself, but I hope it does, because Im planning to get one to play with. |

Bartmanekul- Again, 279 euro is the price of the handset. There's not going to be a price drop to 279, that's the price of the device on its own- the rest is music store and maps add-ons. After January, word is that the device will become available without the bundled services.
edit- ooops, re-read my previous post, not understanding the confusion- noticed that it simply read a "mandatory 100 euro"- should have said a "mandatory 100 euro music store voucher". Sorry for the confusion, all. Nokia is not bumping the price up 100 euro for noreason, just not a very good reason. ;-)
