Nokia 5800 - 10 Things I "Love" About You!

1. The way the red strips on your side fade to black depending on viewing angle! Magic.

2. Your proximity sensor. How you fade out the screen and disable the touchscreen the instant I put the phone to my ear to make/take a call. Magic!

3. Your little stand. No need to purchase extras like desktop stands with this neat little piece of rubbery plastic!

4. External loading SIM card. What a splendid idea!

5. Contacts bar. You've made my text life much better!

6. Input methods. Different onscreen keyboard layouts. User choices, brilliant.

7. Touchscreen! To my surprise, working very well.

8. Keypad lock/unlock toggle button.

9. Your sound quality is exceptional through the speakers alone.

10. And the touch shortcut bar button. Keeping the clutter off my standby screen.

Oh yes, I love this phone. My 3 month old N85 is being left home alone!

Your "loves" of this phone?

I'm not quite as smitten with the 5800 as some of you...

To me this is a rather incomplete stop-gap device, the main attraction is the opportunity to try out the touch-screen at relatively low expense.

I could list the features I dislike, along with comparatively minor improvements that I'd like to see but this current '5800-adoration' thread is probably not the place to do so! ;)

No, I don't 'love' the 5800... But in the absence of anything considerably better, it'll do... For now.

I would like to hear your dislikes, whether this thread or another, don't mind!

I can't understand what there is, to really dislike about it.

Pretty sure most would agree with the 'stop-gap' comment, I certainly do. Its pretty obvious that this is really, a guinea pig for future touch screen devices. There is obviously much better around the corner, though I personally don't think the N97 is it. Although its a technically better phone, the whole QWERTY keyboard thing along with overall size is going to put a few off. And compared to other similar phones, I agree with Stuff magazine, the N97 is a bit of an eyesore.

Thank you for your permission, as I intend to start by commenting on your list of 'likes', it will make it easier! ;)

I agree entirely so far (never having handled an N97), with your last paragraph... Though I admit to being more impressed than I'd anticipated being by the size and convenience of handling of the 5800, so history may yet repeat itself!

I've never, ever wanted a stripey phone!

Useful, yes but the same sensor idea was used on the Nokia 7650 all those moons ago, to mute the external loudspeaker, when picking the phone up to listen closely.

3. Your little stand. No need to purchase extras like desktop stands with this neat little piece of rubbery plastic!
Oh I just love the idea of needing to cart a delicate piece of hinged plastic about with me, simply to enable the darned thing to balance at a viewing-angle... Superb notion, whichever dope thought that one up? The same sentiments apply to the case-opening tool supplied... Sorry, the Plectrum stylus.

4. External loading SIM card. What a splendid idea!
Not quite such a splendid idea if you happen to drop the card though! I speak from experience, having once spent over half-an-hour grubbing-around on hands & knees, searching for a card worth over 50 UKP (at that time). It ain't a lot of fun!

Quote:
5. Contacts bar. You've made my text life much better!
That displays only 4 friends? Even I, a practising anti-socialite, can muster up more mates than that!

Quote:
6. Input methods. Different onscreen keyboard layouts. User choices, brilliant.
This point I'll grant you, I find it far faster to text on than the N95 T9 keypad.

Quote:
7. Touchscreen! To my surprise, working very well.
Hmm... I've had a few glitches with the touchscreen, probably because I'm wary of pressing too hard on it...

Quote:
8. Keypad lock/unlock toggle button.
When using BBCiPlayer, for example, sliding the 'lock' button both kills the backlight and pauses playback, curiously, when streaming radio, it only kills the backlight, RealPlayer continues streaming... I'd prefer a two-way slide-switch, UP to lock, DOWN to lock and kill backlight maybe?

Quote:
9. Your sound quality is exceptional through the speakers alone.
I don't find them louder than my N95... BUT they can handle distortion, particularly a heavy bass, far better before becoming painful to listen to... There's much fun in store for users of public transport once the 5800 is common-place!

Quote:
10. And the touch shortcut bar button. Keeping the clutter off my standby screen.
If by this you mean the drop-down bar top right of the screen... It could have been SO much more useful... If only it were programmable... Strangely it appears to be... as you step through the options, until you reach the option of choosing an app for a particular icon on the bar... And find only one choice there!!

Amazingly, I do have some constructive suggestions to make...TBC :)

Thanks again Logan for allowing me to subvert your thread! ;)

But this isn't a negative point surely? So they're using some features which appeared in previous phones, not like Nokia haven't been doing that since the year dot! :D

I use the carry case. I attached the stand to the carry case loop hole! :P You're right, I know what you're getting at, it should and could have been made simpler and built into the rear casing. I'll give you that.

I'll also give you the point on the plectrum stylus. Utterly useless IMHO.

Again, I don't think this is really relevant. You can drop your card just as easily having the sim card in the traditional places. Its not like it can just plop out onto the floor.

This is more about you being clumsy!

Is that the point of it though? Wife, Home, Parents, Best Mate. Four most are probably going to have on their phone. I think that's more the point. Not to have your whole address book or best part of it on the screen.

Or for some it might be Wife, Mistress, Lawyer, Bank Manager are their four main contacts!

Usage dictates how quick one can text. I never used to touch T9 for years, always preferring the old school method. I could type faster that way. Then I tried T9 and decided to persevere with it. Its now my fastest method of texting. I'm sure using predictive with the touchscreen alphanumeric keypad will now become my fastest method.

I'm already flicking the stylus over the keypad like a man possessed! :D

Precision has been my main 'glitch' with it. That's more a text size issue for X application though, where its so small, it can sometimes be hard hitting the right link for example.

Not sure why you would want to use the button whilst watching RealPlayer anyway. But if you did, it currently acts how I would personally want it to act. Pause the program you're watching, kill the backlight, and lock the keypad. Its quick at doing it, can be useful in many scenarios I can think of. As a frequent train traveller, being able to do that quickly as you're about to get up off your arse and off the train, onto the next one, unlock play resumes - pretty handy.

One big flaw there of course is the iPlayer application itself doesn't seem to want to stream over 3g for the 5800 yet :P

Again, the radio example you gave, works how I would want it to personally. I'll explain this one aswell, don't worry ;)

Majority of the time, you're going to have headphones in if you're going to listen to streamed radio. For the most part, people listen to radio when out and about. So start the stream, flick the switch, drop out backlight, lock keypad but keep streaming, then stick it in your pocket and forget about it while you listen to the radio ;) Even if you didn't have headphones in, I'd sooner have the backlight off and the radio still streaming to conserve 'some' battery power.

Makes sense to me.

I can't believe you don't find the sound fuller and louder on the 5800. I just ran the iPlayer on both my N85 and 5800. 1) the 5800 was notably louder then the N85 2) the N85 was very tinny, scratchy, verging on distorting, the 5800 had none of that.

Can't be arsed getting my N95-1 out and trying that also, but I bet its similar setup to the N85 :P

Yeah, can't argue with that one, granted.

1. Theres a black version coming out, but why on earth don't they release it at the same time??

2. Both have points. Its old news, but usful.

3. Both useless to me, but since it doesn't seem to have increased the price, I am not complaining.

4. Logan is right, what difference does that make to taking it out and dropping it if its behind the battery? Your actually less likely to drop it, since you wont be juggling a battery and back cover!

5. Meh, dont use it, wont ever use it. But I feel they are not making use of screen real estate.

6. Joy.

7. Im loving it, some hate it. Very personal preference on this it seems.

8. Have to agree on Logan with this one. Any more difficult for lefties though?

9. Sound is ****ed good. I prefer decent quality to loudness.

10. Arrghh. Why can't we change it? And I highly doubt this will change in any firmware updates either.

Also like the narrowing down keypad you get when searching your contacts. It intelligently looks for matches as you type and narrows your lettering choices down as appropriate.
