Small FM Transmitter

Anyone bought one of these:

Car FM Transmitter Handsfree for Nokia 5310 5800 5320 on eBay, also Car Kits, For Nokia, Mobile Phone Accessories, Mobile Home Phones (end time 16-Feb-09 12:03:35 GMT)

Quote:
* Connect the FM transmitter to your mobile, connect the FM transmitter to the mini USB car adapter, plug the adapter into the car's cigarette lighter.
* Tune into an unused (blank) frequency channel of the receiver and adjust the volume of the receiver.
* Press UP or DOWN button to adjust the frequency of the FM Transmitter according to the receiver.
* Play the music of your mobile, enjoy it through the car stereo.
* It will automatically mute the music and switch to talk mode during calls and resume playing music after calls. You can talk hands free via built-in stereo microphone and the car stereo.
* You can also use the handsfree function when you make a call.
*For optimal voice clarity, distance of 30 to 60cm between the speaker's mouth and the microphone is advised. If distortion or significant noise happens, please tune down the volumn of mobile phone and tune up the radio.
Its pretty much "no frills" but in the absence of a built in one, I'm looking for the smallest one I can get. Only thing that bothers me about this one is no way of telling what frequency you're at! Unless there is a display I can't see in the pic!

Hmm... That's certainly very neat! Good find!

If you look at the pics under magnification, there does appear to be an LCD display at the side of the up/down buttons, as also illustrated in the two diagrams on that page... EDIT: One small caveat... If the LCD display is as illustrated, then on the 5800, it's going to be upside-down! :(

My preference is that it be self-powered, I don't want to have to connect to the cigar-lighter socket each time I use it...

As the ad quotes (the car charger for charging the handsfree fm transmitter only, not for charging the cell phone), there may possibly be an in-built battery, in which case it may be worth buying AFAIC... I've mailed the seller to ask about this...

Self powered would be preferred though not a major problem for my needs, as it'll be mostly used in my work vehicle where it will be permanently plugged in.

Keep me posted with his reply though!

I may get one of these, however found a local seller on eBay selling a used official Nokia FM transmitter for £7.50 that I can collect from him :)

How good has the experience been with FM Transmitters for you guys? In mine they haven't worked at all worth bothering with. Both one from Proporta and the one in the N85 have had a very short range (about 2 feet from the windshield) and even then are full of static. I wonder if it is my car, or if it is just general usage of these things.

I've only ever had two FM transmitters. One was a Belkin, which worked absolutely fine. Occasionally suffered from nearby interference, but that's going to happen regardless.

The other is the one built into the N85. Hasn't got great range, is vehicle dependent I've noticed as it works fine in my work vehicle but not so well in the wife's Micra. Has to be right close to the radio/aerial.

Overall, the convenience for me, overcomes the small issues they suffer with. Its so much easier then burning CD's, wired solutions etc.

Ive got a belkin one that requires a car cigarette socket and has a normal 3.5mm jack so can plug into any device. Used to use it for the iPod and did great. Range was pretty good too.

ive tried three or four, and the only one i would recommend is a nokia ca-300. the range is great, retracable cable, charges your phone too and comes with a 3.5-2.5 adaptor. cheap and a good product at £7-8
