Blue 5800 here too and I have to agree as above. Didn't really notice the 'problem' until reading this thread. Now I know it's there it's annoying but it's something you have to look very hard for. From Nokia direct, delivered on release day.

Looking into the gap more with the display lit up, right in the corner I can see a small piece of plastic. Looks ominously like some sort of catch that isn't doing what it should be. Could be nothing. Just noticed it obscures the light from the display as I look into the gap so something there.

I'm certainly not going to super glue anything myself. I'd rather take it back for an exchange if they sort it or just a refund. Its going to go one of two ways for Nokia. They'll either sort it out because so many complain, or they'll not give two ****s because they've sold so many and its onto the next poorly designed phone.

A few hours ago I followed the procedure in the manual and removed the mid-band part of the casing (four Torx screws and a couple of clips each side... So very easy to change the colour-band should anyone wish to)... To gain access to the clips securing the front cover. This I removed, complete with the touch-pad membrane, held in place inside the rim of the front cover by a metal plate, surrounding it.

I then re-assembled and re-secured the front cover assembly after examining it... There is NO sign whatever of ANY clip either on or near the top corners or across the top of the phone, a clip simply doesn't exist in these positions.

The ONLY clips, apart from the ones around the bottom of the phone (which is extremely well-secured!!) are the ones in the following pic and the ones opposite them (not shown) on the other side of the casing. As you can see, the top-most clip is placed well down from where it actually needs to be!

1. What were the case-designers smoking?

2. Why the H E L L did not one of the 'expert' reviewers pick up on this?

That is weird. What is the logic of not securing the top like the bottom higher up?!

Bugger. So lets talk theoretically here. The case parts involved, are they something that Nokia could amend and swap out at service centers i.e. new version cover set. Or is the problem more deep routed then just a case problem, and therefore even less likely they'd completely swap the phone guts.

Theoretically.

If that makes sense lol

This is really poor. The shoddy workmanship we've seen in recent handsets is just plain shocking and unacceptable.

But you know what's worse? The fact we all come back for more!

Nokia can fix this by a new front-frame moulding incorporating more clips around the top and a new body-moulding to incorporate the corresponding latches. Obviously this will never happen as it would mean re-tooling the moulds at phenomenal cost.

Even if the front-frame only, could be somehow modified to fit more securely, we hit another little snag... The touch-panel assembly and the touch-frame assembly which secures it inside the rim of the front cover are one-time-use components, once removed, they are scrapped and new parts fitted... Add to that the fact that to re-connect a new touch-panel connection, the main circuit-board needs to be removed... And you can see that most likely nothing will be done to rectify this annoying 'feature' of the 5800.

So.... Like the infamous 'N95 slider-problem' the solution seems to be up to us... Get your thinking-caps on folks!

EDIT: The thing that's puzzling me now is why the left-hand side top of the casing is so much more firmly secured than the Right-hand side is!!

Thought as much. Yup looks like another one for the consumer to sort out!

Just Google searched the issue and found similar discussions all over the Nokia forums! One dating back to early December! Reading one guys comment he said he spoke to Nokia and they acknowledged it as a common complaint, and basically said "its nothing to worry about"!!!

Obviously the legitimacy of this response is unknown, but I can believe it...

What hope do we flaming have!?

Logan... If it wasn't such an irritating 'feature', it would be laughable that a company such as Nokia could make such a stupid, idiotic and elemental mistake! So much for their much-vaunted 'Test-to Destruction' centre that was recently publicised!

It just astounds me, that they can let millions of these handsets fly off the belt with such an obvious flaw.

I refuse to believe that nobody from Nokia flagged this up. A company cannot be that lax with their QC surely.

If it didn't cost me £250, its almost laughable.

So from your findings spook its only really a matter of time before it happends , how could they not secure the top of the front fascia its just common sense isnt it. Do you think they use a type of glue/sealant to hold the top on instead of catches? It could be why the left side is a bit better?

Still going to swap it tomorrow 1st thing ill check is the top of the phone just to make sure its secure

then ill see how long it takes to break if it does etc

hoping cpw are ok about it , iam sure they will be ,

cant see an easy fix for it from the user , is that front fascia easy to get off spook? That would make using a glue easier , but it would be a tricky little op with a chance of damage to the handset

is there room for a double sided sticky pad to be placd there mate?

Sorry if you didnt notice it and ive made you find an annoying little fault :-)
