Do you know where the info is stored, who has it and when it will be used, Gaz?
I really don't see the point though since a terrorist could just get a phone off of eBay without handing any details over... It also makes me wary of selling my phone when I'm done with it if it has my details attached. |

A terrorist would just steal a phone anyway, or just nick some SIM cards, it wouldn't make a differnece if you are about to blow yourself up would it?
Stupid government. |

its not really the terrorist they are concerned about..
some ppl like to purchase a pay as you go sim card, and terrorize someone they dont like.. keep calling them in the middle of the night and such.. thus, registration is required as the law enforcers will b able to identify the user and put a stop to it.. well.. thats what our goverment (malaysia) claims.. |

During my first term of contract with O2 I was being constantly hammered with nuisance calls about switching contracts. The really irritating thing was the fact they had ALL of my personal details, they even had the dates my contract started and expired.
I checked I still had the paper copies of my contract, no-one had obtained them, and I certainly never ever give this kind of informations out. In the end I contacted O2 who said my info 'may' have been passed on, despite me not giving them permission. Funnily enough the calls stopped after O2 gave me a new number, on my insistence. To be honest this has happened more than once, it is also the reason I left Virgin Media, constant hassle via the phone with information that was supposed to be not used by anyone else. |

there's always small print somewhere about details being supplied to third parties and the descriptions become so convoluted that you're never really sure if the third parties are allowed to do anything with your data or not.
Vodafone, for example: question is: who are these mysterious third parties/agents/servants?"Disclosure of Data will only be made to third parties who are our agents or servants acting on our directions". standard contract stuff, unfortunately.

Some years after that, my dad started getting calls, asking if I lived there etc etc. Turns out that Vodafone hadn't recieved my letter of cancelation (always send it via recorded delivery!) and because I had moved, claimed they couldn't contact me. This is dispite the fact I had moved 2 mins down the road. And dispite the fact I had taken a new contract out with them via a third party. Vodafone themselves had all my new details! These debt collectors were extremely dodgy, dispite me getting in contact with them to resolve the situation, they carried on harassing my dad, even though they had my number. In the end I contacted vodafone, who said 'oh yes, you have xx outstanding.' Since I couldn't prove I sent the letter all those years ago cancelling the contract, I paid up. But when the debt collectors found out they were furious. Looks like dispite them saying that they were fully with vodafone, I suspect they had got the debt off off them and wanted it themselves (a common enough practice, to 'sell' debts). I can only hope Vodafone and other networks no longer use such companies, or pass information on to them. |

My daughter got a payg phone from phones4u a few weeks ago and since then has received countless sim cards and top up cards from every server you can imagine.
They insisted on her giving her name ,address etc even though she is only 13!! |

legally speaking, if the debt is in your name and you don't live at that address any more, your parents are not responsible and the debt collectors cannot legally do anything. i know those charming neanderthals who make the threatening phone calls and make the house visits are less than charming but it is legally classified as harassment.

The gorillas that come to the door are easy enough to deal with. A little knowledge is a powerful weapon in the right hands.
