Nice article from K Flyer of MobileRoyal explaining the what exactly the OLED is.
What is an OLED ? | Mobile Royale ![]() Advantages There are many advantages of using OLEDs. The main of them being the lower cost of manufacturing and the better viewing provided by better colours, better brightness and the ability to view almost the same despite your viewing angle. OLEDs are also better power optimized and also have a faster response time than usual LCDs. Whereas a normal LCD has an average response time of 4-8 milliseconds, OLEDs can have a response time of less than 0.01 milliseconds. Which would definitely make the N85 look slightly more responsive in our case. Disadvantages But the biggest disadvantage of OLEDs is said to be their low lifetime. Whereas a usual LCD has a lifetime of around 60 000 hours, OLEDs typically have a lifetime of around 14 000 hours. However, Toshiba and Panasonic have come up with a solution to this problem by using a metal membrane which will help deliver the light from polymers more efficiently than the current OLEDs thus doubling the lifetime of OLEDs to past that of the LCDs. But the way this will perform on the N85 is yet to be seen.

And thats only if they havent introduced the metal membrane to it, in which case thats 3 years solid.
A phone spends the vast majority of its life with the screen not activated.

I don't think that'll be the case with an OLED screen. Since it doesn't use a backlight, then you won't be able to see anything on the screen unless it's emitting light (ie: switched on)
Unless you want cClock in black text on a black background ;) |

But do that many people have that on anyway? I dont know if N series has the same thing, but when its locked, if I press the middle of the Dpad the screen comes on and just shows the time.

Nah, mine doesn't do that. If I press any buttons, the standby screen shows up, but without backlighting. Pretty impossible to see anything on it to be fair. Soooo, I just leave cClock running all the time 'cuz I can see it from several feet away.
Don't be thinkin' I have any negative thoughts about OLED though... I think it looks amazing, and I'd get the N85 purely for that screen. |

"""Guys over at Smape.com had the chance to review both the N85 and N96 and managed to compare the N96’s 2.8″ LCD screen with the N85’s 2.6″ OLED screen, and the results was stunning! Yes, there’s a huge difference between both screens, the N85’s screen rendered photos in an amazing N96-killing way, making me wanting one right now! And, If that’s not enough proof for you, Rita Khoury a.k.a dotsisx from Symbian guru also managed to compare the N81 LCD screen with the N85’s, and the results were as if the N81 screen \and I quote “white-tinted”! """ Today I watch online qwestons from Nokia and yes in almost 10 qwestons Nokia told if you like games and stuff the OLED screen is amazing and one other thing it make provments is the battery life . The OLED screen use much less power and save the battery.

Some very interesting things about OLED from Steve at AAS: AAS Feature: The Nokia N85 and OLED screens: Not perhaps the Holy Grail
There is a downside to OLED - viewing in sunlight. One thing you really will love - the time is displayed lit up permenantly. And I notice Steve said this: Quote:
This phone looks to be better and better.
