now that is some hopefull news for me, thanks for that. i have my phone on 24/7/365, burning out a screen is always a question mark with any phone i use, tho i have not had any issues with my Nokia phones (not in the screen department anyway).

Pardon me if its obvious, but do you mean something like a renter's insurance? Or you mean taking out a dedicated policy just for the device?

That is really comforting to know now! Gaz, do you have an idea of how much would it cost to replace a screen on the N85, including the labor cost? AAaaah, screw it, I am going for the N85; there are way too many good things I've read about it to pass it up (also the form factor is really good). I will take up the issues as they come up! Thanks a lot for the replies folks! Last edited by DreamCatcher; 01-05-2009 at 10:40 PM. |

DC, I was reffering to a dedicated mobile phone insurance, independent to your operator.

The lifespan tests so far have been on blue OLED displays. They typically last 14,000 hours or roughly 5 years at 8 hours a day.
I'm guessing the 2 years estimate comes from the theory that people leave their phones on for 24 hours (14,000/24 = 583 days) but in reality unless you're constantly playing with it , the likelyhood of the display being on for 24 hours in a day is pretty slim (unless you play with it in your sleep!) I do leave my phone on 24hrs. I understand that since OLED does not have a backlight, the screen remains on the entire time the phone is on, especially since I want to have the clock visible. However, with the current phone that I have, I actually "play/use" it for at the most, 2 hours a day; i.e. the backlight remains active for not more than 2hrs a day. From what I've read, it seems to me that the OLED screen is "wearing out" even during standby- when the phone isn't necessarily being used, but is on and there is something displayed on the screen. But no matter what, Im still going to get this phone next week! ![]() I just wanted to get an idea of the lifespan of the device, since I had plans to use it for at least 3/4 years. |

The in built screensaver clock isn't visible all the time. It's on for about 30 minutes after the phone goes into standy, after that the display goes totally blank therefore it shouldn't wear out as it's not doing anything.
I don't know if you can get a 3rd party clock "screensaver" that's always on, that would be using the OLED though and would probably kill the screen quicker. |

I really don't think you should be worrying about the screen life span at all.
My screen saver comes on after 3 minutes.

Blimey! If I'm still using my N85 in two years time, I'll be extremely shocked that's for sure.

Remember that black isn't a color on OLED, either. Black is off. So, if the screen is black, it is off. Even if you leave your phone on 24 hours a day, the pixels will only be active when it is actively displaying something.
