    N85 charging problem

I have very strange charging issue with micro-usb cable with N85. If you don't know, N85 has single cable which is micro-USB off of which it charges phone and also works as data cable.
    Here is problem...
whether I use genuine Nokia cable or aftermarket cable...
when I connect it to my N85 using PC's USB port, it charges just fine. BUT
when I connect it to my N85 using AC to USB adapter it doesn't charge. I have tried with 3 different adapters too but no luck. It recognizes and asks me which mode I want (PC Suite, Mass Storage, etc.) but chargin doesn't start.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    thank you in advance...

I am tending to think it's a hardware issue with the Charger block it's self. It might make it easier to send it back to Nokia for a repair job mate.

Where did you get that impression.

    Wall charger just straight charges,

Micro USB charging from PC, auto charges but then asks how I want to connect too.

It's not a issue for everyone.

think i didn't make myself clear (sorry about that)
i meant wall chargers like the one iphone uses. Where you can actually insert a usb cable into. (*I actually used the iphone usb charger-DIDN'T WORK*.)
I didn't mean the Nokia charger which came in the box.

I can't get my N85 to charge through the car usb adapter either...

I think it only works with the Genuine Nokia charger not a cable plugged into a usb plug adaptor.

Doubt it. Can you not just buy a additional charger or charge via the pc?

    this is very inconvenient....
My version is 11.047 latest one.
I tried with 3 different AC --> USB adapters (2 generics and 1 Belkin) AND
I tried with 3 different micro-USB cables (2 generics and 1 Nokia Genuine)
but none of these combinations work. Again it recognizes as soon as plug in cable and asks for connection type but charging doesn't start.
Every cable/adapter above works fine with PC usb port so it's not cable issue and how could 3 adapters be bad? I mean c'mon.

I don't think it's low voltage/power supply thru USB jack is an issue. I always knew that all these adapters output standard 5.25V @500mA which is same as PC output so why it's not charging. It GOTTA BE SOMETHING MINOR but just can't figure out what!!!

Does AC to USB adapters worked for ANYONE? and if so, what firmware are you using?

I can but it's not solution. If I have something exactly same, why should I have to spend more $$?

It wont work unless you have a genuine Nokia mains charger or its plugged into a USB port..

My CA-100 does the same it refuses to work plugged into a usb to mains plug.

Didn't your phone come with a Nokia USB wall charger? Mine did. It was a standard Nokia power cable, but with a micro-USB plug at the end. Was that only in the US boxes? I never charged the phone off the PC and always plugged mine into the wall for charging.

yes mine came with wall charger too and its working fine. But my goal here is to find out why is it not working using AC adapters if every other usb charging device works fine for example my Creatize Zen MP3 player, My bluetooth headset, etc. USB power/voltage level and Connector type are standard so it should work. It just doesnt make sense. I am not crazy but I hope you understand where I am coming from!

And if it wont work unless genuine Nokia accessory is used, it's somewhat screwed on Nokia's end.

ANOTHER IMPROVEMENT FOUND. The Nokia charger is now detected more reliably.

With the Orange firmware, my phone would think i had plugged a USB cable in and ask which mode i wanted to connect in. Sometimes it would also fail to show "charging" on the screen.

Now it just starts charging without asking me about what UBS mode.

These issues probably went unnoticed by most as there is so many n85 out there and so many different firmware variations for the phone too. "
    __________________________________________________ ___________________________

do you think debranding is the key to our problems?
I'm on orange and didn't realise that the # key didn't work to silence the mobile,
and the charging fix too until I saw this post on AAS.

My girlfriend's experiencing similiar issues but with the Official Nokia USB AC Adapter that comes in the box. It thinks that it's an attachment though and asks the same thing as if you were to plug headphones in, for example 'Select Headphones, TV Out, Other Enhancement' and doesn't charge. Even when the phone's turned off now, it doesn't show that it's charging.

i have myself a n85 and i think that the problems within car charger is that nokia n85 are need 1200 mA output and those chargers "china made " are all 500 mA so checked another solution i pluged my usb cable from N85 into car audio which has a usb output which i used till now for playing music from my usb stick
the n85 pop's up the menu as is detected as pc suite, mass storage or last 2 option and i chose to cancel and did start to charge from that moment
i did prove it with 5 gps software till now (nokia maps,route66,ndrive,sygic,navigon) and seems to get charged on all of them

    maybe will help for some
    bye

I have an after market car charger but it has the correct end it isn't OEM nokia but it charges just fine, I have an Lg charger that is the same end as my N85 and it charges just fine as well. I don't really know to much about the wall charger I use a docking charger and swap batteries, it's a bit easier than being attached to a cord for hours.

Talking Charge N85 from ANY USB port SOLUTION!

Is this thread still alive? 'Cause there is a way to make the N85 charge from ANY usb port. If you have a spare data cable around, and are willing to do some snipping, then all you have to do is this:

    1) Cut a slit in the cable a few inches long, enough to expose the braiding underneath.
2)cut away the braiding (the metal)
3)find the red, black, green, and white wires.
    4) The red and black wires are power, and the green and white are Data + and Data -. Cut the green and white wires.
    5) On the HANDSET SIDE, strip and join the white and green wires together (solder, twist, however you want)
    6) tape up the cable agian using insulation tape, or whatever

REMINDER: - - - - Join the green and white on the HANDSET side.
    - - - - - - Because you took away some of the braiding, the cable will be flimsy in that part, so be careful with it!

This does work, and I can now charge my N85 from ANY usb port, such as a car adapter, or an aeroplane terminal.. Wherever there is one! =] Its silly how nokia dont include one with the phone to begin with...

    click THANKS you appreciate it!

Mine only charges with the original Nokia AC charger, or the PC cable hooked to computer. I have also tried several USB-to-AC adapters with the Nokia PC cable, but never get it to charge. I was trying to eliminate one cable for travel purposes. There must be some function in the Nokia transformer that initiates the charge function.

I have done exactly the same thing. Looking at the Wikipedia entry for USB tell us that this is how the new standard for USB charging is intended to work. The short circuit of the data wires signal to the phone that a charger is connected so we can charge faster than the trickle charge used when connected to a computer.

I wonder if it is possible to connect something this way that deliver too much current? When I have connected the phone to a USB battery the battery and phone got pretty hot when using Joikuspot (draws a lot of poer) at the same time.

It is strange that you do not seem to be able to buy these kind of cables.

    N85 Charging problems

    I'm from brazil.

I am with an n85 from about 1,5 years and the phone Allways had charging issues independent if i'm using USB attached to a computer or AC charger.

O charge via USB on Windows, need to be with Nokia PC Suite Running and have do plug / unplug lot's of time the phone from USB port until he gets loading.

On linux, he appears to charge on the first time that we connects the phone.

I really beggining to hate all NXX nokia phones. Thay are slow, PC suite and Nokia Ovi Suite is very slow and very heavy (lots of RAM memory needs in order tu run theses f**** programs.

I think i will never get a nokia fone with Symbian OS.

The charging problem is VERY ANNOYING!!!!!!!!
