Angry New FW has wrecked my N85. Help?

    Hi Everybody,

So, I did the latest (North American) FW update, over the air yesterday, and I have run into a troubling situation. After the phone rebooted, once the install was complete, some of the phone's features are not functioning properly. For example, from the standby screen, none of the shortcuts are working, including the left and right softkey and the "desktop" shortcuts. Interestingly, the media and symbian keys are still working. Also, the device is just being much slower overall, and the clock screen saver no longer comes on.

WHAT THE HECK? I was so psyched, thinking "wow, Nokia still cares, and is actually still creating updates!", but then was very disappointed with the result.

Can anyone give me a solution? Should I seek warranty service? Is there a way I can reload the previous FW?

    Thanks a bunch!

No, you can't flash it to a previous firmware version... I suggest that you re-flash it to the current version again and see if that cures it... If not, it's a warranty job!

Thanks for the advice. Might sound like a dumb question, how does one go about re-flashing this device?

Using NSU (Nokia Software Updater) via a PC, you should see the option to re-flash to the same firmware that is already in the phone in your case, as it's already the latest version.

I don't know anything about the OTA update options as I've never been able to do one yet, so I've never got that far!

N85 latest firmware update version 20.175 problem, bug, etc post here

I updated my Nokia N85 just now, July 2, 2009 to version 20.175

Thank You Nokia for adding the Dictionary Application

    Bug/Problems found as of 7-2-2009
    1. When you slide it down, it does not function, the phone does not lock.
    2. When you slide it way down, the music player shortcut does not function, the lights does not lit, even if you click it.
    3. When you slide the shortcut lock at the right side of the phone, it does not function too.
    4. THUS, the keypad and phone cannot be locked. (the only lock is by pressing the power button and choose lock which you will have to enter lock code "12345" and unlocking it by entering the same code.
    5. When you slide the camera cover at the back the camera does not initiate. You will have to open it then activate it manually.
    6. When you open the Photos then Captured Images Tab, then open an image, then back, then open again Captured Images Tab, it crashes, the Photos closes.
    7. The shortcut music player keys only work if you open the music player, play a music, then u can use the functions which are previous,play/pause,stop,next. BUT, the light does not lit, you just have to know the sequence of it placed there.

this are the bugs/problems i found as of now, NOKIA, please... PLEASE! release an update that has no bugs/problems in it, don't you test the firmware before you release it? updates are meant to remove problems, not add more problems, if you cannot fix this at least, maybe because N85 did not really sell that much, please do not ignore the fact that n85 users care, profit = quality, consumers have the right to enjoy what they paid for, either give us n85 users a flawless or almost perfect firmware update, or email us that all n85 users have the chance to give to nokia back their phones and nokia will change it to a same priced phone, or a better phone. THANK YOU!

It seems that you're not the only one with N85 new firmware problems!

A re-flash might sort it... see THIS post.

Just an update: I am doing a full file backup in PC Suite, and the progress of the backup is frozen at 72%. Currently, the backup process is in the "Phone Model-Specific backup" phase. Does this part normally take a long time? Should I just cancel the backup?

Please ignore that last post, I guess I'm just being impatient. It's now at 74%, haha.

Ok, so I managed to do a full backup, but a new problem has arisen. I cannot find a way to reinstall the current firmware in PC Suite. Is this something that isn't possible on NAM models? Am I not looking in the right place? I checked for fw updates, and it told me that I already have the current version (which I am aware of), and did not give me an option for re-installing it.

    Anyone?

Bugs on N85 after update ? Really ?

Hi I've updated my N85 the same day the update was released and I havent got any of the above bugs.. Except maybe the lock when slider closes one, when I close my slider it was supposed to lock the keypad but it didnt.. A simple re-boot did the trick, no problem ever since(few weeks).. Otherwise NO bugs whatsoever ! Anyone else out there WITHOUT these bugs ? Is it because our phones dont all come from the same place ? My software version is 20.175.. My guess is that ur update ddnt go too well, the process was maybe not done properly ? Or just try re-booting to see what it gives.. Best of luck.. Lemme know how it ends please !

My version of NSU (1.6.13EN) Says "Your phone software is already up to date. If you wish, you can reinstall it."

There is a 'Reinstall' button at the bottom of the panel... Do you not see this?

BTW After your upgrade, did you reinstall an entire back-up by any chance?

OK, I've made a new discovery. After leaving my phone connected to my computer, using PC Suite, the phone began to function properly. The shortcut keys worked, and my carrier logo (ATT) appeared (which was mysteriously missing before), as well as being a whole lot speedier...it basically seemed to be back to normal.

HOWEVER, after disconnecting the phone from my PC, I rebooted it, and the very same issues came back! Seriously, what is up here? I haven't found a way to reinstall the FW yet either, so am I screwed?

Hey guys, I haven't experienced any of these bugs. It is always recommended to reboot your phone after update. If things got seriously wrong, then try a hard reset and restore with back up file. Be sure that you already backed up your phone previously! Good luck.

it might be the memory card, as when its connected via usb to the pc the phone doesnt use it, or something along those line lol.

id suggest formatting the memory card.

Im really suprised at all these problems youve all been having... Ive one had ONE problem, and thats the video player doesnt ask me to play from the beginning anymore. No Biggie. But your issues... Christ...

Could i recommend, after you backup, to do the three-finger salute and hard-reset the device, re-flash it, then restore it?

If that doesnt solve it, maybe you should change your product code to a generic EURO code and try again to see if you get any different results... Thats what I did. From V11 I backed up, hard-reset, changed product code, installed V20, then restored, and have no problems since. Even managed to hack it with Hello0X1.4 and got all my cracked apps back again =D

No problem with the new update either, except my contacts was all doubled and had to hard reset it.

the "play from the beginning" is a good thing it's gone imho. Just press pause then review for a second and it's at the beginning.

Rich27, there's something wrong you shouldn't have these bugs, try removing the memcard.

lol How lazy are we? Your post just made me think about it... But I still think Nokia should have included it. I like being lazy =]

Have any of you tried using CORE player? I've tried the latest vesion, and found its performance to be LESS than the Realplayer used by Nokia. WTF? Isnt CORE player supposed to be amazing? Has anyone else found this?

Now it automatically start from where it was stopped, and if you want to rewind it, just press pause and hold review for a second.

I think it's better like that, the menu thing was just a gimmick.

Found new bug... The old images before the update became pixelated and with lines, i haven't tested it if its ok if i transfer it to my computer, but my problem is, why are the pictures displayed that way? NOKIA people sucks! my N85 sucks! please do something NOKIA! either fix this with a new update, or give us N85 users a break, NOKIA should absorb all n85 phones and switch it with a better phone, (e.g. N86 8MP) thank you...

Ok, maybe all you guys still having problems should update to the newest firmware, v30, it was released today. If you cant, change your product code using NSS.

Btw, this still doesnt solve the 'play from beginning' issue some of us were complaining about. Ggrrrrr.

Wink I had a successful FW update to 20.175

    Hi Guys,

    Hi Guys,

I have updated my N85 to the latest FW 20.175 yesterday. And once after updating i had so many problems and one among them is my standby screen was flicking (flashing) continiously and i couldnt use my phone for anything, I was totally disappointed and lost the hope of restoring. Then today first i did *#7370# and it didnt work. Then i did *#7780* which was said as hard reset and it didnt work. And as a lost hope i tried booting the phone by pressing Green Button (call accepting) + * + 3. And thats it everything got reset and my phone booted properly and asked for language, date and time. It works perfectly. Luckily the firmware update was successful and all the notable changes i felt. Now its solid and the phone is not getting crashed for past 4 hours and am totally happy about that. Since before FW update the phone got often crashed when i use the music player continuously. I have fallen in love with this phone again...

    Cheers!

    N85 Good Update

I updated to 20.175 a week or so ago with no subsequent problems. I did it on a whim, without backing up. Had a queasy feeling waiting for it to process, but all went well. Good luck to all

I also did it kind of impulsively. Worked out great and I haven't had any trouble.

One great fix was the photo "zooming". Before, when you tried to zoom, it would go into gallery view THEN go into zoom mode. Glad that extra step is gone now.

Otherwise, I'm noticing a few new apps here and there and the phone seems to work a tad faster. It feels a bit more responsive, or is it just because it restarted recently?

Closing the keypad locks the phone now and immediately turns off the screen...I wonder why they changed that?

These are user-defined settings which have reverted to default after the firmware upgrade. You can set them as you wish.
