Has my N8 got screen bleed?

When the screen is showing white or light colours, there's a small dark patch on the edge of the screen about 2mm wide by 5mm high.

It isn't a "solid" patch, it seems darker in the middle and fades out towards the edge of the patch.

When the screen shows darker colours, there's nothing there, it's fine. Is this my screen "bleeding"? If so, what can I do about it?

I can't return it to Nokia as
    (1) I bought it second hand, unused, off ebay (was fine when I got it), and
    (2) I have flashed it with Phoenix, thus invalidating any warranty.

Could I replace the oled screen? Are there any people on here offering this service?

    Thanks.

I know of a place that my friend has used, but it's not chep. £41 for a replacement screen. Do you have insurance? It may be covered under that if it's accidental impact damage on the screen?

Failing that, if you provide the screen and postage costs, I'll fit it for you at no cost.

Thanks for that. Do you recommend anywhere to buy a replacement screen online?

I notice we both live in the Manchester area. Would you be ok with me driving to yours with a replacment screen and waiting while you fix it? (if it's not too long a job). It'll be some time yet before if and when I do get a replacement screen.

I bought my old N86 off ebay. Had a problem with it and returned it to Nokia so buying second hand on ebay isn't a barrier to returning.
Not sure if flashing the firmware really makes any difference to the warranty. But your problem is hardware not software.

I entered my IMEI no. on this page, and it said that my phone is still in warranty and I can send it off free of charge to be fixed: Nokia UK - Nokia - Warranty

It doesn't say that I need proof of purchase, it says "If possible, please include a copy of proof of purchase when you pack the phone for return"

So I think I'll try this. Anyone else posted their phone off to Nokia via this service? (especially those without proof of purchase) . What's the turn around time like?

Another thing - they mention that you must remove the battery and battery cover before packing the phone. Surely they don't mean this for an N8?? I think they have just forgotten to update the page...

no you dont need the purchase bill ..only u have to take the cell to nokia care ..they will check the imei number and will notify you tht its in warranty period or if its not .they will tell you the charges to get the cell repaired...

or you can try this if your cell is not in warranty period ,you can apply for extended warranty of ur cell ,it will charge you something around $30 (in india charge is $30) i dont know how much they charge there..!!1

I was under the impression that as long as you don't change the product code, flashing a firmware is ok (you can flash it back to the original firmware)?

Strictly speaking yes you invalidate your warranty. However if you flash it back to the original firmware I'm not sure how they'd know.
This forum taught me all I know - use search and let it teach you too !

This is the best shot I can take of it. It looks worse than on the pic, it's more darker.

I used the Nokia Care service from the website and it was very good. They send a courier to pick up the phone and deliver out back to you. It was with them about a week. You get a tracking code so you can view the status of your device. Of course with an N8 you only need to remove sim card and memory card. I didn't send proof of purchase.

Thanks laban, that's what I wanted to hear. I think I'll do the same.

When you got your phone back, did you have to reinstall everything (contacts/apps/games/etc)? It says on the Care site that as part of repair they reinstall the firmware. I just want to check if this is the case...

Well today I got my N8 delivered back by UPS, with the screen fixed, and it works great. Thanks again to those who helped. I never thought I'd be able to get it repaired free of charge, having bought it second hand off Ebay and not having proof of purchase.
