N82 Battery Life On a v31 Handset

I'm quite sick and tired of the abysmal battery life on my Black N82 from Orange.

I just updated from v30 - v31 and it appears to have become even worse. I thought like the N95 8GB this was meant to have improved battery life than the N95 however I don't see how an N95 could have worse battery life than this.

It lasts about 9 hours... in mostly GSM mode. I use the packet-data connection occasionally and switch to dual mode when doing this and I've only made one 30min phone call today and it's telling me it's about to die.... that's terrible.

Does anyone else experience such poor battery life, or else what kind of times do you guys get?

Thank-you for the help.

There must another problem with your phone or your battery. I can easily get two full days with the sort of usage you have mentioned.

It's second hand but the receipt says it was issued by Orange to the original owner in August 2008... I don't expect there can be that much battery wear given that time. I do have quite a few applications installed on both the memory card and the phone. However I rarely ever have anything else running as a background process.

I got mine brand new in the beginning of June 2008. There are many factors which influence the life and performance of a battery. You seem confident there are no apps draining it, you could check for stuck button (search for thread on this) or just get a new OEM battery and see whether that makes any difference.

Dead1nside, let me guess, you are using a microSDHC card? I used to use a 6gb SDHC, but from going back to a 2gb SD, i got x3 battery life

Nope, I'm using the 2GB microSD that came in the box.

I've been doing some more Googling on this topic and it appears to be it could either be this memory card problem, where the phone unbeknownst to the user will keep trying to access the memory card and drain the battery down.

Or that again unbeknownst to the user and without any notification the phone will attempt to connect to a previously used wifi access point regularly, sapping the battery life. This can be picked up in the connection log in the Log utility - I found this symptom myself but wasn't convinced this was wholly it after testing.

I've now completely wiped the phone: soft reset, hard reset (holding down keys while starting up the phone) multiple times and formatted the memory card twice. I'm now going to do some testing with and without the memory card in this state and see if it gets better. I have two batteries to test with as well so I can pretty much eliminate the battery or certain software faults.

I think this is just a bug that's cropping up to a significant minority of users, where some feature of the phone is being activated when it's not meant to, it cannot be easily detected because it doesn't show up in the normal ways that it should and it just saps the battery life requiring a hard reset as many people have discovered....

That is I hope that's the problem, if not I'm screwed.

Thanks for all your comments. I'd like to hear what power usage on average your normal N82 handsets are using Nokia Profiler.

Hi, I'm encountering the same problems with battery life in my new black n82 v31. New battery without recharging comes out ok. after the first charge, drains fast. don't know why. I suspect the same applications running in the background without my knowledge. now my phone is frozen, camera doesn't work, messages won't open, contacts, everything until the battery drained.

You've got to hard reset your phone. Look it up on Google, you've got to hold down a combination of buttons while starting up the phone and then let go of them when you see the Nokia hands logo. Wipe the memory card as well. Then reinstall the stuff you need. Worked perfect for me.

Do you have any picture files that were transferred from PC to your phone? i had the same problem with v31 when I transferred picture files from my camera and from my older nokia phone to the n82 black. Battery was dead within 12 hours. i removed the files and had two days of use easily.
