Here's GSM Arena's take on the N86 with a new full review from them:

    Nokia N86 8MP review: Lens wide open - GSMArena.com

Mostly positive i reckon apart from image quality which is slightly worrying considering it's Nokia's first 8mp camera phone.

went to carphone warehouse to have a go with one yesterday

the build quality on the two i looked at was spot on , the slide had no play when open or closed and the slide just snapped into place witha very firm movement , reminded me of a smasung built slide

it was quite heavy in the hand but had a nice feel to it due to the weight and the size was vey pocketable

really like the colour of it in the indigo/black and the silver trim looked nice

front was a fingerprint magnet but looked really smooth and stylish

kick stand was a bit weak but would do the job and seemed to support the device better then the n96

icons seem to be the same as the 5800 type

os seemed pretty fast and the screen looked amazing , liked the media buttons and the way they lit up

pics i took in the shop came out quite nice but it was well lit and could only view them on the n86 screen defently ok for 1st firmware

overall i was impressed with the build quality of the devices i looked at

i was tempted to walk out with one but i kept saying to myself that i can get the innov8 cheaper and it will do prataclly the same job as the n86 , if i was looking for an upgrade to my n95 id snap it up

as it is i have the n96 with 32 gb memory running v20 and a 1200mah genuine bl6f battery which is a pretty good setup and iam wandering if the n86 offers any real point in upgrading , in good light my n96 and takes great pictures very useable and genearally photos that can be used , the only time it fails me as a camera is in real dark conditions , the n86 wont be any different in the dark conditions really and in daylight my pics are good enough for the time being on the n96

also the n96 has lanother 8gb and memory is quite important for me , the screen is also smaller allthough brighter on the n86 and after using the n96 and 5800 it was noticeable

maybe when it comes down in price ill have a pop but as it is ill think ill stick with my n96 it cost me too much money to upgrade to a new phone so quick

its defently better then the n96 etc but if you have just bought a new handset i cant see the point in rushing out to get it yet as newer ones will probs be out soon with maybe bigger improovements and allthough the n86 offers many improovements over previous models iam not sure they are enough for me to fork out for it yet , if i was looking for a new handset id buy it simple as , it has everything i want but not enough to make me rush out and ditch my allready decent handset :-)

any feedback on yours yet tommie mate

i was so so close to getting it , really did feel super in the hand and the buttons were a pleasure to use i must be getting older as my sensible side kicked in and said is it worth getting a neew phone that isnt that different from the one youve got in your pocket :-) a litlle while back that would never have evn crept in to my mind it would have been new nokia 8mp , decent slide iam sold :-)

thats the problem. the n86 in a way, aint really a major upgrade. other than the 8mp n the variable aperture. if i were u buxz, id wait for a little while. that is wht im doing nw. imo, its like going from a xp to a vista. i really hope nokia can pull something spectular here after the n86..

Don't forget the N85 generally had awful build quality. by all accounts, the N86 is far superiour in this respect, not to mention it's supposed to have better materials.

Press the Thanks button...it's not going to hurt you....although I suppose you could pull a muscle in your finger while doing it so be careful!!!

First sry for delayed feedback BuxZ as I have so much work before the
holidays start ..and have not had the time to play with the phone,
No naviwheel as the N81 more like N95,
and I find some nice and real bad news !
First the camera make decent "nightshoot"
this I took the last night in my office with almost black in the room.

    Camera: Nokia N86 8MP
    Exposure: 0.071 sec (1/14)
    Aperture: f/2.4
    Focal Length: 4.6 mm
    ISO Speed: 374
    Flash: Auto, Fired

    File Size: 611 kB
    File Type: JPEG
    MIME Type: image/jpeg
    Image Width: 3264
    Image Height: 2448
Encoding Process: Baseline DCT, Huffman coding
    Bits Per Sample: 8
    Color Components: 3
    Orientation: Horizontal (normal)
    X-Resolution: 300 dpi
    Y-Resolution: 300 dpi
    YCbCr Positioning: Centered
Date and Time (Original): 2009:06:24 01:17:36
Date and Time (Digitized): 2009:06:24 01:17:36
    Light Source: Flash
    Color Space: sRGB
    Custom Rendered: Normal
    Exposure Mode: Auto
    White Balance: Auto
    Digital Zoom Ratio: 1
    Scene Capture Type: Standard
    Gain Control: High gain up
    Compression: JPEG (old-style)

And now the bad news wich I fell little already when I open the box
(the seale sit there but not so proper like you had want it )
It almost fell if someone had play with it ( like a demophone)

notice the bag for the earphones

There be someone who have daub with a penn wich made me mad
and I decide to return the phone tomorrow.

It's my retalier Katshing Sweden wrong because
it's the second time they do this !

Round 2005 when I order 2 N93 one to me and one for my son , mine N93 had be
used with lot of old sms and pics and stuff !
And the price then was more for one N93 then the N97 today !

They may send me a new one , I have still get more then 30 Nokia phones
from them in the last 4 years without any big problem ,but I see if I buy there any more.

Im the proud owner of a new N86 debated between getting this and the N97 but in the end the reviews made me settle for this.

One question though, the sms indicator keeps blinking on the upper right hand side of the screen even though theres no new sms's in my inbox. Anyone know why?

ijm , youll love it , it oozes class and good cfratsmanship :-)

seriously ive played with 3 handsets in two different shops and all three were built great

the slide moovement is sooooo smooth

love the indigo colour as well , looking at tommies pics the cameras going to be great by v20 as its allready better then most now :-)

    you lucky man

i had a paly with the n97 too the other day and that really grabbed me again the build quality was much much better then what ive come to expect from nokia

cant decide on if id get the n97 or n86 now

tell you what would get me , a n86 - n97 merge device

form factor of the n97 with the camera of the n86 id have the best of both worlds :-) maybe that one that nokia have up their sleeves :-)

I bought it from Nokia direct, I thought I was buying it with 15% cashback, which I have since found out is wrong. It's only 5% cashback.

Which is £380. Should arrive this week. I have not seen it anywhere less than £380 Sim Free.

    Smile

Well, just for the record I got one at the weekend.

Got a Vodafone upgrade for £200 (ouch!!) from Mobile Phones Direct (well, Nokia Retail) in Winchester.

    First opinions:

    - Fantastic build quality. Had an N95, N95 8GB then N85 and it's significantly better than all of them.
    - Forced to use Nokia's own email system now, can't use the "vanilla" S60 email. But I'm liking their email so far.
    - Now lets you send Meeting Requests. But you can't receive them!
    - Scrolling gets very quick so it is now feasible to scroll through your entire music collection when selecting a ringtone for example. It also allows fast scrolling round web pages in the browser (either inbuilt or Opera Mini).
    - Upper keypad is a massive improvement over the N85. I had the bottom of the keypad split TWICE on my N85. it now uses proper tactile buttons that feel very nice and light in use.
    - When loading Maps onto the internal mass storage you must first download them to a memory card and copy the files across. A bug in the Maps Loader forces this.
    - No more Search on the standby screen.
    - No more wlan wizard on the standby screen.
    - But only four appointments shown on the standby screen, despite the extra space for more.
    - Great icon set, looks a lot "fresher".
    - Inbuilt compass orients Nokia Maps display to proper north so that you can instantly tell which roads are which.
    - Haven't used the camera yet. I know, it's the biggest upgrade! But I think Tommie's already done a great job of covering that.

IJM: Your buying habits are very similar to mine!! I reckon you'll love the N86.

That's it for now, back to work I guess.

I use it when ever I buy off the internet as normal. So my admin charges are well covered for the year and it's only £5 anyway. So it's also admin charges since January anyway.

I only did it under the basis of I mis-read the cash back amount. It appears to be 5% now, but I am not that fussed really. I was going to buy this phone regardless so any cash back is a bonus.

I'd hardly call it an obsession, more routine and ease of use, for me anyway.

Mine should be arriving at work some point this week. I am so please with everyones comments over build quality, that's what struck the deal for me really. So thanks for all the input.

I'm afraid not. Although you can set it as a regular shortcut like all other apps.

So did you actually pay £380 or do you pay the full amount and then get a refund later on? I've not used these kinds of sites before so i don't know how they work.

Available next Monday from Play.com the N86 for only £389.99 including free delivery! Not bad at all.

Does anyone know whether Play.com's stock will come directly from Nokia or from abroad?

You pay the full amount, and then around a month later you get credited with the cashback.

I've earned about £800 in cashback this year so far. Just from buying everday items I would normally. Worth looking into.

Hey IJM have you got your N86 yet?

What do you think - positives/negatives? Any chance of a review?

Had a few hours play with this phone. This are my first thoughts, may change with more use.

    Good Points :

FAST and I mean fast, menus load in an instant.
GPS is brilliant, fast find from a cold location.
Good build quality, feels very solid.
Onboard memory is very nice indeed.
Amazing Screen (we all knew that)
Features are jam packed as per ususal
    Superb camera as documented.
Nice soft Navi Key, easy to use and to whip round menus with.
Kickstand, nice touch. It's not going to snap unless your yanking it about and slamming it down.
Yellow tint to the keypad buttons, superb in the dark.

    Bad Points:

    * Very heavy, after coming from the 5800, you can feel the weight of every gram. Has big pocket presance.
    * Keypad buttons are to small. I much prefer the flat keys of the N85.
    * Lock switch is a bit pointless on the left and to high. If you're right handed and holding the phone with one hand, it's difficult to reach as you use your middle finger.
    * Top keys are a bit small for me, takes a effort to actually press them right down.
    * Camera button is very stiff (might ease off with more use)
    * No hot swap for memory card.
    * No memory card shipped with the package.

I'm quite impressed with that IJM! Your bad points don't seem too major for me apart from the one above which i don't quite understand.

For me the only downside would be the weight. In your opinion how much heavier is the N86 against the N85?. Is it huge or just more significant?

Meaning you can't swap the memory card easily, as you have to remove the rear cover to access it.

It feels a lot heavier yes, more so around the camera module. I'd say it's probably shock factor, as I'm now finding quiet manageable.

Great you have got it IJM , I agree with your first thoughts

I can say almost the same when I get it first about the heavy ,
but after some days use it feel real nice and now I dont want any
light as a feather phone, the same with the camera buttom .

For me it took some days get use to it from the 5800 , but now I really start like it.
But shame with no memorycard include in the box.

I'm look forward for more thoughts later and ofcorse that you join in the N86 pics tread
    I fell little alone..-

    Cheers

The same thought here too about the mem card but I'm real glad
it's very easy to remove the rear cover and not as the N97.

It can be little shock factor if come from the ultralight 5800 ( 109 gram)
    to the heavier league as the N86 ( 149gram) N95 8GB (128 gram)
    N97 (150 gram) Xperia (145 gram)

    But I like it
