ive gone back to my n96 am selling the n86 and am in the process of buying a samsung omnia hd (i8910)
cant risk it with nokia , chances are id buy the e72 and the gps wouldnt work as good the omnia hd has won over many nokia fans for its super build quality , cookable roms , reliable hardware if things go well with the samsung i cant see me owning a nokia for some time ive had enough of spending that amount of money and feeling dissapointed with my purchase ive never bought a phone and sold it within 2-4 weeks (n86) or took out a contract and sold the contract phone within 3-4 months (n97) i think head of quality control is on holiday or on drugs or something like dk said people are noticing the crap gps or dodgy camera scratches within 2-4 weeks maximum so why didnt they most of my posts latley have been criticising nokia so iam not going to buy another new nokia untill its been out for at least 3-4 months and i know theyve got it right they are taking us customers for a ride latley apple wouldnt treat people like this , you go back to the apple shop to see a genius at the genius bar then if the phone is broke and its covered by warranty they give you a new one there and then , none of this 2 week wait to get the phone back after a quick reflash nokia phones , nokia aftersales , nokia staff all need a big major overhaul its gone stale really really stale over at nokia hq and ive had enough of eating their stale goods iam off for some fesh stuff from someone else |

Problem with the Omnia HD, from an owner of the device... Hardware is fantastic. It really is. There isn't a thing wrong with the build quality of this device. It's solid, it's tough (mine has had a few spills and is still flawless without a scratch) and it just is a marvel of a handset from a hardware standpoint. The biggest problem with the Omnia HD is that it is running S60v5. Honestly, Samsung just cannot program a decent Symbian firmware to save their lives. Updates are slow, there are quirks and problems that hold the phone back from being truly amazing. If they had the software gurus that Nokia does (the ones who can make the outdated hardware of the N97 and etc run like it is twice the speed it actually is) this device would be unstoppable. Here, though, S60v5 is very immature, and the only company really making improvements to it is Nokia... and Nokia won't be sharing those improvements with a rival. After the initial wham-bam of the phone wears off you are just left wondering... what if. What if this phone had shipped with a different OS, like Android? What if this device was actually made by Nokia? Why can't a company have great build quality like Samsung, but awesome OS programmers like Nokia?
Don't get me wrong... I like my Omnia HD... but on an every other day basis I get pissed off at it. I'm still using it as my main phone, and have since I owned it... I also look to see what else is out there almost every day. I haven't found a phone to replace the i8910 yet, but I can't say I'm going to be loyal to it as soon as something better comes along. It's all down to the software, and no cooked rom or promised Italian/Hong Kong update has made that any better. |

i like s60 though six mate no grumbles with it
infact its probably my o/s of choice as i know my way round it , can hack it etc etc so with that in mind i think the omnia hd will be perfect for me gps , music , camera , movies , internet , calls , sms is what i mainly use my mobile for so i think the omnia hd ticks all the boxes i think ill also like samsungs effort of s60 more as you can get into it more it isnt locked down as much for example the audio codes that let you change the settings for the audio of the phone , the extracted and cooked roms that can be found , it just isnt as locked down as nokia s60 and also there seems to be quite a little hardcore team behind it the main thing iam worried about isnt really the os but more the size of the device it is quite large and a users friend once called it the pool table due to its dimensions hopefully i dont find it as annoying as you it cant be as bad as the n97 i owned and the software glitches on that that made me shake my head everyday in despair think the one iam getting is running the italian firmware apparently , is this an ok one i dont think youll see anything beat the omnia hd this year mate ive said it for a while now and it still seems to be true i had hopes for the sony satio but it needs a 3.5mm jack and an upgraded battery really for my daily use oh well roll on omnia hd day :-) |

This is my N86 and the answer from Damian Dinning in the AAS Forum was this: " Lens shape change hi. Change is to the shape of the opening around the lens cover only. Nothing else. It was found that such a small change could make a small difference to lens flare in some situations. As part of continuous development as most manufacturers do during a products life cycle, not just in this industry but in many others. we felt it was worth doing. Why not? This is not to say there was a known deisgn issue before you start calling Nokia care centres, as there is nothing fundamentally wrong as such with the original, but we were able to make it a little better. If I had an original should I be concerned in any way? Absolutely not! br " He says nothing about scratches.

Hmm this is not less lens flare with the new camera disign, looks really bad. Remember my N86 camera look slike this: And Damian said that this is a new design to reduce lens flare. But could be coincidence, the first of the 2 photos I made looked better in terms of lens flare: And finally here is a photo with my old N86 with the old camera design. |

Well, I sent my old N86 off to the flagship store in Regent Street. I'd originally phoned the nokia customer service and sat and listened to a total idiot who denied that there was a problem with the phone and tried to tell me that I'd be liable for the cost of any repairs.
Luckily after speaking to the flagship store, they agreed that I could send the phone to them to be tested and fixed. I've got the phone back this morning and its a replaced device- looking at it- I've not noticed any big differences with the new handset- seems to be the same design, so we'll see if the camera lens cover still scratches the lens in a few weeks time. On the GPS though, I've noticed a big improvement - i'm getting a lock with maybe 8 /16 satellites- where I used to get 3,4 or 5- so yes- hopefully a big improvement. I went a walk and ran sportstracker and noticed the resulting track was a lot better -not so many jags -hopefully that'll stay that way -since i use the sportstracker a lot. Other than that- i'm still re-setting my phone up- still playing about with it- i'll post back if i get have anything else to say about the replacement handset. |

Today I went to the exact same Care Centre in Regent St. LOL guess what they told me? I actually spoke to a *specialist* not one of those who don't even own a nokia phone. He confirmed that there will be a new design in the new year for N97 and N86 which will have a camera lens and cover EXACTLY like the one on the N900 *one with a RAISED PLATFORM* The design that they have now is just ***temporary***. Anyways he advised me to wait until next year and come in for a repair. Also the GPS he said they could do it now...but I'm just gunna wait for it. and for those interested...I asked if I could change the fascia to a white one, he said it would depend but cost around 35~40 pounds. Not bad eh? Will be just like a brand new phone. :D I'mma do it all next year and hold out. p.s jeez the N900 looked sweet...if it had the same cam as the N86 i would've bought it tonight in a heartbeat. Raw 1GB processing powerpwnage :O He opened up 30 Internet pages before we both noticed a slow down. His name is Chris btw (nokia specialist) thnx dk

Thanks for the info- I'll see how the phone does for the moment and if there's a big improvement in the new year then i'll send it back for a repair.
The GPS on my new device is an improvement -its too early to say if the camera on my new device will have problems- just have to wait and see. |
