Thinking about getting N900 as my next upgrade

Hello, I'm new to this board and apologies if these questions have allready been asked.

I'm due an upgrade in April, I know that seems quite far off but I wanted to see what phones are on the market so I dont pick a lemon! I'm on vodafone uk on a monthly contract. The last phone I really liked was my Palm Treo which I thought was immense. When I came to upgrade last year I didn't really look into it much and picked the Sony Ericsson C902. This time around I want to make sure I pick a phone I'm happy with. I have been looking at various phones, the new Palm did have my eye until it went to O2. I cant stand Iphones so next thing that I looked at was the N900. After reading many reports and the various speculation of wether it is or isnt coming to Vodafone I'm happy that it is.

The questions I have are pretty simple but just wanted to get some clarification from people allready using the N900. I want to be able to have my hotmail emails sent direct to my phone, can this be done with the N900?
Also all this talk about branded and unbranded with Voda, and Nokia saying they dont want it branded. Does that mean if I get the phone from Vodafone it may possibly be branded by Vodafone and if so will that stop me being able to update the firmware on it? I'm quite keen to get this phone and be able to use its awesome power, but not so keen on it being limited by Vodafone branding.

Your thoughts and advice would be very much appreciated.

the only answer I have for is about Hotmail. If you have a premium account you can configure the N900 to POP it for you. This will be the case with any device, I believe. Otherwise you'll have to access it via web browser. The web browser on the N900 is spectacular.

The only other suggestion I have is to read up on specs and reviews. Think about what you really want in a device.

And as an edit and an afterthought... I've had my N900 for almost a week now and absolutely LOVE IT! Yes, it does not do MMS and if you have it tied to a BT headset, the ringtone ONLY comes through the headset. Both of those things are being worked on and are minor in my eyes. I think of this device more of a tablet that happens to do phone functions. I have to charge it every day because I have multiple web based apps/widgets running all day and I'm ok with that. What laptop/netbook/tablet doesn't need to be charged every day?

    No buyer's remorse here, buddy.

i would go for the 900,i got mine last week on vodafone,as far as firmware upgrades go,i believe you download them from nokia/maemo direct to your device over the air,so you dont need to use vodafone..Application manager has a direct link to upgrade. I have read on here that the 900 is not locked to a carrier ,not tried a different sim in mine yet though. It is the best device i have ever used and their will be tweaks in the firmware which will only make things better. It is almost as good as having your laptop in your pocket.pop3 emails are easy to set up

Forgive me for saying this but you're wrong.

I have a standard hotmail account and am currently using Nokia Messaging to get it pushed to the phone in pretty much real time.

No issues whatsoever. Nokia Messaging is awesome and is comparable to my Blackberry which I also use.

For yourself and other N900 owners: How to Set Up Push Email on the N900 <- how to set up Nokia Messaging on your N900 (and you can use your normal hotmail account to get the emails on the handset!)

    For the OP:

The N900 is unbelievable mate. I loved my N97 even through the issues & I've found no major issues as yet, a few niggles etc, but the OS is new & by April it will be properly refined. You can do a lot worse than the N900 but not better!

From my understanding, that's just some settings that need to be reconfigured so it arrives in both places!

Thanks to everyone, I think I may just get myself a N900. I await with interest to see what Vodafone will be offering in the new year.

Everyday, you mean from morning till night? I have no problem with charging it every night, as long it lasts me all day. Does it last you 12 hours with heavy use? Or just light use?

Everyone's got a different idea what light / heavy use means !

IMHO if you are expecting 12 hours heavy use out of this without a charge (at the moment) then you are going to be very dissapointed ! 'cause in my opinion / experience, its not going to happen - sorry !!!!!

I charged my device for the first time in 3 days last night. It was on 50% with Wi-Fi on all day long & some calling and texting...

The Battery on the Nokia N900 gets BETTER after a few charge cycles!

    Thats really weird Nirave,

Two examples for me would be:-
1 Killed battery in 6 hours almost constant use surfing web with multiple web pages on the go (wifi).
2 !asted from 6am till 8pm - 2 short call, showed a couple of photos and about 1.5 hours surfing the web thru out the day (network connection) and down to last bar

Maybe I need to cycle charge the battery or something ?

Anyway, still seriously loving this device more so than any other i've used or seen

I charge mine every night after some good web use, not heavy, and a few widgets pulling updates every 15 or so. A few calls and txts too...

I have had mine for 2 weeks now and I wouldn't be without it. I read a lot of reviews and they all said different things, but I can say I have not had no problems with it. Hope you enjoy your N900

Bit of an update, my battery charge seems to last longer than back in December - and i probably use it more

Seemed to build up over a period of time, and thinking back someone did say this would happen (sorry can't recall who, off hand).

Hope you enjoy your new N900

Yeap, but a good quality screen protector should be good enough.

I have been using the N900 almost 3 weeks now. I am really happy with the phone. I am almost always on Wifi, I charge the batter at night and it last me pretty much whole day till 8PM. Good part is that, the USB cable can also charge your phone. I am not complaining about the battery life, because I understand with that performance under that screen you need lot of power is required.

But there are some some stuff I didn't really like about the phone though.
*Small keyboard keys. - if the keyboard had to be so clumsy then why even putting a keyboard there and make the device heavier.
    * On screen keyboard responses slow, plus very poorly organized.(I wish they were more like Iphone keys)
    *Portrait mode
    * Call notification - a very basic feature wasn't in the phone and a developer had to take th burden of making an app for it.
*Music player could have more functions, creating playlist is a pain in the ***.

    Likes:

    *Desktops - very customizable.
*Contacts - how it pull down all the info in one place.
    *Email
    * Multi Tasking
    *App manager.
    *Headphones
    and many more.

i installed the call notifaction app but to be honest the flashing leds do a really good job for me so i uninstalled it

thats the good thing about maemo user decisions to make the handset yours :-) you wanted call notifacation so you installed an app for it , i was happy with the leds so i didnt need it , you have to love the user freedom

You can get the N900 for only £431 from Nokia Online. They've dropped its price considerably.
