Remember not to try and compare Maemo so Symbian OS Paul, many new N900 owners fall in this category, but with plenty of help available on the Maemo specific forums, all becomes clear in time.

hi g taken from
Download Beautiful Dark Theme for Nokia N900 Maemo How to Install this theme on Nokia N900 Maemo: To install the themes, till they are not available in deb files, follow these three simple steps: * Extract the theme files on your pc, * Connect your N900 with your PC * And transfer the extracted folder to :/user/share/themes on your maemo device. must admit i havent messed with themes iam uisng the black and blue theme default but have changed my wallpapers , it looks really nice like this to me i think its because the themses havent been packaged properley in say a .deb file as there is only a limited theme maker for maemo at the minute :-) |

The themes directory can be optified by typing these, as root, in terminal: Code:
cp -r /usr/share/themes/* /home/opt/usr/share/themes rm -r /usr/share/themes ln -s /home/opt/usr/share/themes /usr/share/themes I'll be putting up a tutorial later on today on how to optify some of the built in apps, already added them to the wiki on maemo.org but I'll make it a step by step tutorial here. Once you've optified those apps I can say you don't have to worry about running out of root space, if you enable extras-devel (new apps or newer versions of existing apps show here, somewhat like beta apps, but never had any problems here and it's been enabled since day one here). One more thing, here's a warning about enabling extras-devel: Quote:

Code:
cp -r /usr/share/themes/* /home/opt/usr/share/themes rm -r /usr/share/themes ln -s /home/opt/usr/share/themes /usr/share/themes appreciated by the looks of the code iam guessing your telling the n900 to look ina different place for themes and switching the theme storage from the rootfs to the mass memory :-) is that right mate :-) if that is right where will mr g and me put the themes afterwards mr g--- no mate you dont make that yourself its on apart of the memory we cant see via file manager , youd have to use linux code in the xterminal to move a file there , this is why iam awaiting a file manager that can see all areas of the handset , apparently there is one is testing so when that makes it to extras then it will be easier to move files about where you want Last edited by buxz777; 02-20-2010 at 03:03 PM. |

Code:
# Copy all folders and files in /usr/share/themes to /home/opt/usr/share/themes cp -r /usr/share/themes/* /home/opt/usr/share/themes # Remove the old themes directory rm -r /usr/share/themes # Symlink (Symbolic link) the directory back into /usr/share/themes so that the OS thinks the folder is still there, the link redirects to /home/opt/usr/share/themes, somewhat similar to shortcuts in windows. ln -s /home/opt/usr/share/themes /usr/share/themes cp -r /usr/share/themes /home/user/MyDocs One more thing, the Mass Memory, which is ~27GBs is mounted on MyDocs, it's a VFAT (FAT32) partition that's formatted in FAT32 for compatibility with windows and other devices (e.g PS3), FAT32 is not the best filesystem type as it gets corrupt easily if it's disconnected while in use (pulling out the battery or the USB cable while copying files), so it wouldn't be suitable for apps or configs, that's why /home is used, it's a mount point for the 2GB partition (/opt is symlinked into /home/opt so that the system thinks it's using /opt but it's using /home/opt)

That takes up 5MBs of root space, GPE filemanager's better imo
