Nokia's touch-screen phone, the N97,
dubbed by many as the ‘iPhone killer’ is set to have
a hefty price tag when it hits the market.

The phone, which has an estimated price tag of £500,
is expected to hit the shelves in April after launching in December at Nokia World 2008 in Barcelona.
Concern is growing over which networks will take on and subsidise the phone.

The current Nseries flagship phone, the N96,
sparked controversy when O2 did not immediately take up the phone
and other networks refused to fully subsidise the phone due to its expensive price.
O2 eventually conceded and decided to stock the phone, but did not subsidise it.
Some operators charged around £250 for the device on the mid-price tariffs.

The release of the N97 will be preceded by Nokia’s first touch-screen release,
the 5800 XpressMusic phone, which is available for pre-order now in Phones 4u and Vodafone.
The 5800 will also be free on £35 contracts on Orange at Phones 4u.

The N97 has already drummed up interest on the internet.
The manufacturer is encouraging Nokia enthusiasts to design their own widget for the N97
as part of a competition to see their design on the new handset.

Nokia said the device will be ‘the world’s most advanced mobile computer’.

ps Tom Moran, yes the Pico pocket projector look to be real nice .

i know you should never believe shop staff but staff at a big o2 store near me was pretty convinced that the n97 was coming as soon as late febuary/early march

i stated yeah but you wont be selling it as it will be to much competition for the iphone

he admitted that the iphone was just a gimmick phone and that alot of people were turning to the new samsung pixon due to its 8mp camera and smile recognition plus touch screen etc

he also said that at 1st they wernt going to stock the n96 but had to back track due to customer demand and they added it to their list allthough he admitted they had to price it higher then the iphone to make the iphone still look good

he seemed pretty sure that o2 would be soon stocking the n97 allthough he did say give it 2 months after release max and we will have them on the shelves

the n97 would be a good phone for any network to have i can see many users going for it , buisness users , media users , memory whores , touch lovers etc etc

i dont think it will be long before it release date is announced and more advertising takes place on tv ads etc

iam hoping o2 do get it , i have a contract with them that ends in march and id be intrested to see the n97 in the flesh as i the vids it looks a bit big for me but in a real life enviroment it might be ok

id at least like to try it and have a play with it

hope o2 dont just follow the iphone this year , phone tech is moving so fast that the iphone will have to up the anti some to compete , i mean apple are still on 2mp and i reckon samsung will be pushing 10mp by the end of the year

yeah i thought this with the n96 mr g , went to vodafone got a cracking deal , but after using o2 for nearly 4 years , vodafone just didnt seem as good/professinal i dont know there was just something about them

its resulted in me selling the n96 on ebay and buying out my vodafone contract

iam in the middle of it now and its quite a bit of hassle

iam going to try and stick with o2 , they seem like the best network going to me through experience

orange and vodafone to me just wernt a patch on o2 and o2 seem to have much better 3g coverage in essex at least , there were loads of blackspots on vodafone where i just couldnt get signal

the grass isnt allways greener mr g

ive tryed leaving twice and each time ive come back lol

dont get me wrong they aint perfect hence why i tryed leaving but compared to the competeion they are better for me anyways :-)

This is great news, I have eegerly waited for this phone for some while, BUT.

If this is meant to be a allround phone (office \ media \ surfing users) Why the H*** dosen`t it have a Fm transmitter like the n79 ? i thought this was bound to be in the latest "flagship" phone. as it would make my 3,5 mm jack fm transmitter that runs on batteries, obsolete (spell check?) but no, i have to get a bluetooth / 3,5mm jack input - car-stereo to be able to listen to my 32(+) gigs of media in my car (wireless annyway) . .. Hrrmpf

Don`t get me wrong , i still like the sound of this phone and allmost defenetley going to get it

Well... I've never seen a good FM transmitter. I'm not saying they don't exist, but the ones I've used have either been unable to broadcast because of limitations to them (most FM bands are taken around here, especially in the high 100s) or if you do find an open slot, they sound really horrible. To me the FM transmitter was a bit more of a gimmick and completely useless, and I really don't mind it not being in the N97.

I have no idea how long the wait will be for us in the US for one of these things. Could be ages, but I almost don't mind. After my horrible string of luck with my last four devices from Nokia, I think I'll let you all work the bugs out before I get one in my hands.

Since my N85, I won't ever buy a phone without FM transmitter now. Its absolutely essential to my purchasing specifications.
