if it had been called the nokia e97, would you be arguing its case that its really an nseries phone? ignore the model number, look at what brand series its closer to
The difference in length is 3mm, maybe you should look at the side-by-side photos here - N97 Review to get an idea of how they are not really different in shape.

No, I would have been arguing the case that it is not an E-series phone. And since the next Communicator will not be around for another couple of years and will be Linux-based it would hardly be possible to confuse them.

so basically its not far off +/- from those eseries devices, apart from the thickness. has a qwerty keyboard, and even looks similar to an e75 crossed with a 5800.

but your right, its hard to confuse them

Exactly, except it does not have the full QWERTY touchscreen of the 5800 nor the full QWERTY keypad of the E75, so again a not quite successful compromise. I am tired of Nokia trying to incorporate all possible features in one handset and ending up with most of them being worse than on other models.

i think i get what youve been saying about the nseries/eseries thing now.
it has a basic qwerty, not enough for typical eseries users, and a touchscreen not as complete as the 5800.
so in their struggle to make a "complete" nseries device with the best of both, theyve created something which doesnt fit comfortably enough to be in the eseries category, thus must be placed in the nseries category

unless ive got it wrong?

You got it absolutely right. Nokia have tried to bundle everything in one handset - so it ends up with compromises made on almost everything - camera, keypad, touch screen, etc. From what I've read so far the only major improvement over existing models is in the music player.

Its place is definitely in the Nseries range given the huge emphasis made on multimedia performance and social networking facilities.

As I mentioned previously, the successor to the Communicator is quite far down the line and probably that's why there are attempts to view the N97 in that context as well.

Take away the social networking widgets and N series assignment, if you gave me the specsheet and phone, I'd say it was a replacement E90.

I'm not convinced by the size, as I keep my phone in my pocket.
