Using N97 as a modem
When I had my N95 8gb and connected to my laptop using the PC suite software that came with the phone, I was able to connect my PC to the Internet anywhere I got a signal on my mobile. As soon as I connected the phone to the PC it would automatically open a program with options to connect to the net.
With the N97, having loaded the Ovi-suite, I do not get a dialogue box when I plug in my phone, so I cant see how to connect my PC to the Internet using my N97 as a modem. Any advise please. Regards Greigster |

I was going to try this very thing tonight ... I'll let you know how I get on. I remember that my N95 only used to work as a modem via Bluetooth, and as yet I've been unable to connect via Bluetooth to my PC, so fingers crossed.....

I downloaded joikuspot to use my phone as a wifi hotspot so I could connect my computer to it. I actually like this better because you don't need to connect a usb cord so anything with wifi is game, for example, an ipod touch. I used to tether my treo to my laptop via usb and keeping track of cords became annoying. The only downside is that it is $14.99, but I am new to Nokias so there may be a cheaper alternative that I don't know of right now.

4th time i've referenced this now. I don't think anyone's really acknowledged it yet... But I think it's important.
Whats the worse that could happen??? So whats it to be iphone or N97? Stephen Fry Reviews The Iphone 3GS If you are on O2, beware that they now have specific Tethering Tariffs designed for the iPhone, billed seperate to regular data usage. To me, this means they can differentiate between data usage types and you may find your bundle doesn't cover it. So just be careful.

Worked out how to do the tethering, its quite straight forward via the Ovi page. Had a small problem as I have Kasperski internet security but it was just a matter of putting in the code for Vodafone into the kasperski anti-dialer.Was using my N95 8gb last month on vodafone and when I checked my account the tethering use was the same as my normal phone internet browsing so all part of my data browsing package........at the moment, but for how long I dont know. Will keep my fingers crossed for the future.

Last time I checked, vodafone were the only UK network which specifically allowed tethering in their T&C's. The others either outright disallowed it (or charged it differently to browsing from the phone), or were not clear on the subject.

I cant get Tethering to work with the N97 (I have 200MB of data/month).
I've connected it to my PC (WinXP SP3) using the USB Cable, OVI detects the phone, but when I try to connect to Optus, it instantly says "Failed to establish Network Connection". Ive tried disabling my security software etc.. I also tried connecting to the Internet via Bluetooth on a laptop (Win7) using Ovi (the modem is called "Standard Modem over Bluetooth link"). That also fails... When I press Connect, it says "Opening Port..." for 30 seconds, then it says "Failed to connect to network! The modem may be used by another application, or the modem may not be configured properly" Does this mean my telco has blocked Tethering? Or do I need to configure Ovi, or configure the phone? ps. The Internet works fine when used within the phone itself. Last edited by Anarchi; 07-08-2009 at 01:29 AM. |

I hope tthis serves as a bump. I have the same problem the last poster mentioned. Anyone got this working? I also challenge, you the reader, to download the bluetooth modem driver and try it out. Let the list know if u manage to get it to work...or insights when it doesn't.

What's under Settings > Connectivity > Admin Settings > Packet data > Access point ?
I think you'll need your cell company's internet AP name there. |

Bummer, its blank.
I'm an AT&T customer here in the states. Is that something I ask my cell provider for? Or the fact that its empty means AT&T isn't gonna give it to me? -Lox |
