N97 Reception

I've been looking to see if anyone has posted a thread about this, and while people have touched on it here and there, we don't seem to have a thread on it - I'm sorry if I have missed something.

So, I've had my N97 now for five days, and I really like it as a device... But I've been wondering if I have a problem with my new network, having moved from T-mobile to Vodaphone (I'm in the UK).

My reception is really not very good, at home or at work.

I often can't make calls or access the internet, in places which were fine before on my N95. Calls drop on me with alarming regularity, and it's enough to make me wonder about making use of the cool-off clause in my contract, something I would have never thought I'd've been doing before getting the N97, I've been looking forward to it for ages.*

But then I do wonder if an FW update might sort all of it out.
What do people think?
Has anyone else been having the same manner of problem?
Could V11 help? In particular I note this in the change log: -Operator fixes (CMCC, Hutchson and Telefonica, Vodafone) What do people think.

(*Which would see me with no phone at all, I wonder if I would be able to transfer my number a second time in such short notice.)

Have you tried your new sim in your old N95? Then you'll know if its the network and not the phone.

Definitely try out the new firmware. It can't hurt.

I've had exactly the same problem - I presumed it was a firmware problem but I've just seen this posted on the Nokia support forums:

Nokia Support Discussions - N97 woes. - Nseries Devices and S60 Smartphones - Nokia Support Discussions

Seems a replacement phone may be the only solution.

That's smart thinking, unfortunately my n95 was taken away as part of the deal... I regret that now.

As soon as that firmware comes out in the UK, I plan to give it a whirl... at the moment I'm still hearing that I have the most uptodate.

Bubba - That's a bit worrying... I'm really pinning my hopes on the N97 firmware helping.

That is definitely concerning! I returned my device this morning, so I didn't get the check out the new firmware at all, however... I had those same type of connection errors and poor network behavior. Now I'm wondering if my bad experience, crashes, and etc were due to something wrong on my phone. Ah well, I'll try again for a new device at the end of summer after another round of firmware updates rolls out. Interesting, though... thanks for that.

No old phone to test as a backup? I still have my 3650 for times like that.

Okay... I'd rather compare with the N95 as I don't tend to use this anymore, but I get three bars on this sofa with my old spv c500, which is about half, as I recall... and at the moment, it's the same on the N97 which isn't too bad actually (but I had to reconnect three times before during a five minute chat).

I don't know maybe it really is just the network not being that hot. I really don't feel that level of call dropping is acceptable though.

I'm beginning to wonder if Tmob have issues lately. I am getting connection issues with my 5800 more and more recently, whereas this has never been a problem in the past.

That said, I have read many reports that the N97 reception is nowhere near as sensitive as other devices.
