Hi All, My N97 is also in for repair it has taken me about 3 months to actually get it back to phones for U as I am disabled but mine also had a problem with the ear piece microphone being almost so quiet I could not hear my callers, the main question though is when they do the repair do they remove all your information and do like a factory reset, I did back it up but I am just curious as to weather they actually do remove every thing and also do they update it to the latest software as mine was on 12 iirc..Thanks for any help offered..
Regards, Wayne..

I received my new n97 for getting it repaired for the lens camera and GPS issue. They added this white material (similar to the one on this site Getting the Care Point lowdown on the Nokia N97 camera glass and GPS) at the back but I'm still having a GPS problem. When I open 'Location' application and run position i get waiting for GPS and it quickly turns to No Connection. Before on my old n97, I used to be able to see it slowly getting satellites but now it simply says No Connection. I just reinstalled maps 3.0 but that didn't help. any ideas? please help
Thanks |

To those who have had the fix done, how bad was the GPS signal before the fix? I've have my N97 since June now and am getting almost full bars, are not all units effected?

Took mine in for the repair at Carphone Warehouse in Leeds last Tuesday. Said they had the part in stock and would fix it within 24 hours.
A week later its showing as 'sent back to manufacturer' - great! Anyone any idea how long the turnaround on devices back with Nokia UK is? |

I finally got around to getting mine fixed recently via a sub 30 minute visit to my local nokia service centre (or care point or whatever they are called today!). Points of potential interest, some of which I know have already been posted but still...
1. I have changed the product code previously to get firmware updates, but changed it back to the original prior to this visit (even though I know they could detect the change if they really looked). Phone was plugged-in for details to be taken, but they either didn't dig deep enough or didn't care. My gut feeling is they didn't care. 2. The backplate removal and replacement, along with the shielding material placement took about 5 minutes total. Interestingly, the guy doing the repair said whilst he knew the shielding worked to improve the GPS, he didn't think the camera slider part was any different to the original design, and therefore would likely scratch again... Certainly looks more raised than the previous piece to me, and has a completely different feel when sliding, but still. I did push him to make sure this was a newly supplied replacement part, and it was, so perhaps his knowledge is a touch lacking? 3. Most amusing / worrying was the general attitude of the guy who plainly stated the N97 was poor, and that every other phone that came through the door was one. Interestingly, the N97 mini also got a slating, according to him suffering the same issues as the classic? Sort of surprised me that. For me, the GPS is vastly improved and now usable as a driving aid, and the camera lens for now remains unscratched, so let's see how we go. Pleased with the speed of the repair (and the decent coffee provided), just a little surprised by the anti-Nokia attitude of the guy. Cheers, The Thinker

Our N97:s were fixed in 15 minutes at nearest service centre. Strange that not all older devices had the problem. New ones are all fine.

GPS signals all the time at 1 bar for me. I have not been able yet to get my GPS position with Ovi Maps :(
Guess it was a bad idea to buy the N97 when it was newly shipped |

I got told it could take two weeks to get a fix, how could that be if some people are getting it done in half an hour?!

Qualain - The fix really can be done in less than half an hour - it's just couple of parts! And the lens issue if needed. I guess not all service centres do it or mayde they don't have enough staff. In some places they do it in 20 minutes if You pay some extra, but otherwise it takes days. The fix itself is free ofcourse - warranty 24 months.
smbsd - get Your phone fixed and enjoy the new Maps and navigation. I have 5 to maximum bars all the time.
