In a word, no.

While I cannot be 100% on that, there is a lot of reasons why.

Firstly, Nokia have never given updates for previous versions. Not even feature packs, which offer very few changes and the core OS is still the same.

Secondly, the N97 is very unlikely to be able to cope. It can't even cope with it's current OS, given how slow it is.

The processor and memory are simply not enough to cope with an up to date and good looking UI.

have to agree with bart here

the n97 will see qt devolopment which means apps will see cross platform releases , however wether the n97 or any of nokias non 3d gfx phones will run the more advanced apps is yet to be seen

however even though the n97 may see some qt apps which will be nice i very much doubt the n97 will see hardly any of the s3 / s4 improovements

maybe less prompts which is part of s3 but i wouldnt expect too much mainly because of the reasons bart said

I also don't think so. It has outdated internals as is so the new operating system will only make it that much slower. Ever experience trying to run Vista on an old XP machine?

We have to make comparison to Apple and iPhone why it was so successful and Windows Mobile was such a failure

Apple iPhone has

very well defined eco system
1) Connectors stay the same, OS upgradeable(don't mind small charge)
2)iTunes very well run apps distribution most apps cheap or free once the free one downloaded you can easily keep updating. Bug free do bit over the top software control but user point they make it run correctly.
3)extensive add on since they keep connectors and form factor same.
4)

Windows mobile
1)Can't upgrade mobile os from earlier version
2)All different form factors connectors etc.
3)Apps can be install from all over no control end result buggy software very bad for customers
4)

Nokia some what in between the above two

1)Ovi store seem good idea but not there yet. Need better app control for bugs and better price model. Very bad when if comes to apps upgrade, backup install, etc.
2)Hope they follow apple model and allow N97 user Symbian ^2/^3/^4 upgrade path
3)If they can't follow if for N97 they should release a next version that should keep the form factor for all future models fixed
4)Make hard choices about what make most users happy than keeping some features to keep some users happy. I think they should make only allow verified apps to be able to install. Also force install from Ovi Client them make sure all apps install to mass storage etc.

but as far as i know, symbian^3 is the same one as symbian^1 (AKA s60) but updated via firmware, and the goal is to reduce the clicks to do an action, symbian^4 is the real deal, a totally different OS, which i cant see available for the N97 or any actual model

Only Symbian^2 Ready for now Symbian^3 will only ready about 3rdQ and ^3 does looks to use HDMI playback and multi home screens may need more memory. I think next week we may get some details about New Nokia phone releases at MWC2010

nope symbian3 is much more the just removed prompts , multi home screens , multi touch support , improoved look and feel , removed prompts , hdmi support via dnla or hdmi out to name just a few

the n97 was outdated before release and the hardware inside the n97 struggles with s60 now let alone a better version

the n97 will stil get support from nokia via firmware upgrades and als qt devolpment

but i wouldnt expect the new s3 implementd on it no way , the ram and processor would struggle

I do no agree with you ...
As already told Symbian OS is going to be for the mid range Nokia Phones. So I do not expect in the mid range to have 256MB RAM and GFX Processors .. So I think if Symbian ^3 is not ported to us, N97 users, the reason will not be its hardware or perhaps .... if it is the hardware it will be the C drive limitation
