6220c 1st time use and mini review/going over
as the title says really , a family member just got hold of one ata good price from ebay and asked me to have a look at it as iam known as the phone guy in the family :-)
the phone seemed to be brand new so it wasnt abused or anything and it was like playing with a new phone the handset was running 03.06 , when i looked through the forums and web pages i could see that their was a new firmware out well i think a few firmwares out since the one on this handset but it was originally on o2 and no updates were avalible via the ota update and nsu didnt seem to recognise the phone the 3 times i tryed and i also didnt want to change product codes if the firmware seemed ok the 1st thing i noticed is the plastic feel , it does feel cheap ,not as cheap as some people make out but yes it feels plasticy , however with all the plastic comes an advantage its very light , the handset is also very small compared to some devices ive used latley , the n95 , the n96 , the n82 , it feels much smaller then them phones mentioned obvously the screen is smaller but its ok and sat nav was ok but not as good as the n95 due to the small screen the gps lock was pretty quick but i was using agps so it should be really , lock never dropped in normal conditions and my garmin memory card worked fine in it allthough i had to reinstall the sis file again i was expecting the keyboard to be naff after reading horrible reviews about it , well the device seemed new and to be honest there wasnt a loud click or any horrible noises coming from the pad and it was ok to use , i certainly didnt have that much of an issue with it , maybe the top keys (6 around the d pad) were a bit small but its a small device i really like the way it had the same symbian version as the n96 , it made the phone feel new and adds a little swoosh over the n95 version the menu transisitions are very nice they dont slow the device down to much and really do look quite good with the screen spinning away and a new one spinning in , i liked it battery life was ok id say around the same as maybe the n95 there wouldnt be too much in it maybe the 6220 would just beat the n95 , I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE N82 BATTERY FITTED THE DEVICE PERFECT AND THE BATTERY COVER COULD GO ON STILL ITS ONLY A 1050MAH AS OPPOSED TO THE 6220 900MAH BUT IT MAY MAKE A LITTLE DIFFERENCE music playback was the same usaul s60 music player which i kind of like anyways , i missed the music controls from the n96 that are on the front of the device as i use them quite a bit , quality via bluetooth stereo was good and it paired with all my bluetooth objects no problems , sony car stereo , sony house stereo , home pc , laptop , headphones , music quality was on par with the n95 but i really missed the 3.5mm socket it was such a backwards step and having to have an adapter attached to my headphones was just dam annoying , i understand it uses more space but i think that 3.5mm is a standard in the uk that should be recognised 2.5mm is better then a nokia adapter but not much screen size was a little small but again its a small device , maybe a 0.2 inch more could have gone into it i managed to hack the firmware with the install server and hello carbide method which worked 1st time i also dont like the headphone socket on the bottom of the device , either side or top , bottom is as bad as having the usb on the top of the device , its not great thinking and should be simple , usb on bottom for docking the phone and headphones on top , the usb is in the right place (the bottom) but the headphone socket isnt great at the bottom speacially as most people need to use an adapter for 3.5mm headphones another little gripe no 3.5mm adapter in the box they cost 99p on ebay couldnt nokia have added one in the box it would have been appreciated by many users from what ive read the camera is very good , xenon flash with a camera cover , like i say very good , clean crisp pics , ok maybe a bit below n82 par but still very good pictures for a phone and it takes marco pictures something my n96 cant seem to do yet lol the camera cover button does feel a little cheap and i could maybe see it coming loose over time which would be pretty bad i was pleasantly suprised by the phone after reading horror stories from the net i thought it was a bad desicion for my family member to buy it , after playing with it i think it would be a good device to have if the n series was a little exspensive for you and you wanted n series features on a budget and in a smaller lighter package then the 6220 classic is a top phone its only missing wifi from the n series line up and to be honest makes up for it with the xenon flash that is on it i put my 16gb card in it and it read it fine , it didnt seem to slow the phone , obvously it did when i 1st opened the music player as thers loads of tracks on it but after the inital load it was fine , if i enterd the music player after the inital load it was also fine the ram is around 70mb at boot which ill think youll agree is pretty decent , how much does the n95-1 have was it around 30mb with v 30 installed ?? this makes the device fast and a dream for multi tasking when using it i never got one low memory warning or crash it seemed very stable to me but then again it has been out a while and should be shipping with stable firmware id defently recomend it it seems like a very good device to me worth also noting i believe its missing the accelemeter of many devices like the n95 , n82 , e71 , n96 ,n85 etc etc i couldnt find an option for it , maybe its there and one of the firmware updates enable it like they did the n95 but i do miss it in gallery and web browser where it was defntly handy to have , you can install landscape pro though as it can be rotated wit a hotkey :-) pros small light thin new feature pack takes 16gb cards gps works well with garmin and nokia maps good price for features xenon flash usaul n series features at around half the price phone is fast even with menu transistions on and 16card in it over 70mb of ram at start up call quality seemed good and loudspeaker was quite loud feature packed evice cons no wifi bit too plastic screen is a tad small but still reasonable top 6 buttons can be small no 3.5mm socket (this is the biggest flaw others are just little gripes) why not use the n82s 1050mah it fits the handset?? camera cover switch feels like it could wear and become loose plastic may scratch easily no motion sensor ie accelemeter i think the pros much outweigh the cons and would recomend it , it has more ram at boot then my n96 , nearly twice as much as ram as my n96 (just over 40mb of ram at boot) it is a fast device and does a great job of doing sat nav , camera . media player , and it can multi task well because of the ram i hope someone finds this intresting or helpfull thanks |

I have to disagree about the buttons, I found them a bit naff to use after a while.
And the 2.5mm jack, ah well.... The N series often do not have much over other nokias, and the 3.5mm jack is always one of the main things. While theres usually space on the other phones, and dispite it making life much easier for everyone, they refuse to do it. Although perhaps the E63 marks the start of a change in this? I would recommend the 6220C to anyone who isn't that much into phones, but would like to have satnav backup, and a decent camera on hand for taking shots on the fly. It's a kind of smartphone, for people who are not into smartphones, if that makes sense. |

I quite liked it and went and got one myself , its a great little phone for the price they go for
iam selling the n96 i got to buy the contract out which it came with , voda just have rubbish signal in my area , lots of blackspots i sold my o2 n95 but have the sim and due an upgrade in march so will use the o2 sim for now and see what they have for offer in march that left with me with a n82 , ive just found a mate that charged me 130s for the 6220c in a+ condition so iam going to sell the n82 for around 225 and use the 6220 till march and have some extra cash in my pocket :-) i can do without wifi untill march and use a 3.5mm adapter for a bit the music quality to my ears seems a bit better then the n82 and the extra cash i could get will be handy and iam quite enjoying the small size of the phone compared to what ive been using latley , i do love the n96 and its killing me having a brand new unused one sitting in an unopened box in the house but ive got to buy out that voda contract as its useless for me with all the blackspots one things for sure , i hope nokia release a new xenon flash phone i dont know if i could use a duel led again after the n82 and 6220c i might even keep the n82 untill my upgrade in march just incase :-) its not the best handset in the world but its a marvel how nokia fitted it all into such a small package and it stands up to some higher end phones quite well iam quite enjoying it at the mo , time will tell if its up to the job but march isnt that far away if its not 1 things for sure itll defently recieve alot of power usage :-) have a good one bart wrote on the 6220c |
