Any help in this regard would be fantastic.

I need this also. I see this post is really old but nobody has ever posted how to do it. I downloaded a japanese dictionary but all the characters show up as boxes instead of hiragana.
I downloaded a trial version of Crystal Japanese and that allowed it to work, but the actual program costs over $80 which is ridiculous.

Have you tried to debranding your device to the ASIA code? You should get Japanese language pack. Here are the instructions

Cheers!

no I haven't, but I did manage to change the font on it to a font that supports Japanese, so now I can VIEW it, but I can't write in it.
would this debranding allow me to quickly choose a language so I can type something in japanese?

I believe so. Try asking someone who already has a japanese firmware. If it works on any other nokia symbian phone, it should work for N95 also.↲↲Cheers!

May I ask what dictionary you have? I have a Japanese N95. It came with English and Japanese input, so I cannot give you any advice how to help you. However, if you have any specific questions regarding settings, ask away. (You should assume you're talking to a donkey as I am not very clued up with this sort of thing.)

Do they have language pack on the japanese homepage of sorts? I can't truly understand japanese as I'm an intermediate level.
