How is Devicescape any different from just selecting a preferred hotspot?
When I go into a commercial hotspot like tmobile, it also logs me in automatically so I don't have to type my username and password into the web form every time (which, since my passwords tend to include numbers & punctuation, sucks on a phone keypad). I can't even get the browser to reliably remember them (it keeps asking, but for some reason ignores my response).

I actually use it on my laptop too because I'm too lazy to deal with the login page at the hotspots I use and I like just opening the laptop and checking my email without having to take a detour into my browser.

By "the browser" do you mean devicescape? So it's a full browser? or is it just something that integrates with the standard browser? This sounds like it will be really handy when using the campus' wifi.

No, Devicescape is a browserless login tool. You sign up for a free account on the website (http://www.devicescape.com), download the software, install it and register the device with your account (really simple to do). Then add your hotspot credentials to your account at the server and your device will be able to login to hotspots automatically. You won't need to start the browser even. There is actually support for one device (a WiFi VoIP handset) that doesn't even have a browser!

As of a few days ago, you can also add your home networks, and other networks you use that are don't need username/password style login (I have the open wifi net that is on the ferry I ride every day for example), and then share them with your friends and family. If you do that, their devices will be automatically set up with network profiles for your network. No need to tell them the key or the SSID - their devices will just recognise your network and get online. And they can share their networks with you too :-)
