i think the question still stands - at least for me that is - is there a GOOD standalone widget or app for weather other than the one in OviMaps? and how good is the one in maps?
By all the pictures on the net, theres at least one, which probably is preinstalled. As to how good it is though, I have no idea.
i would like to know this as well.. someone who has an N8 must know
My N97 has an Accuweather widget

Which weather widget did you install? I saw like 3 of them in the OVI store?
i haven't got my N8 yet, that screenshot was from the Engadget review
I installed Accuweather. I took the top applications box off my main screen and added Accuweather at the bottom. Here's how it looks:
You can't change the widget. If I tap on the widget, I get a 3 day forecast, and then there are arrows to tap for an extended forecast.
The only thing I don't like about it, is on the 3 day forecast screen, I get a ringtone ad at the bottom of the screen, but the application is free.
There is a $9.99 weather widget called Handy Weather, that doesn't look like it has any ads. I think I'd rather pay the $10, than have ads popup on my screen.

If you do end up getting that, could you post some screenshots and if you like it or not?
why not try ovi "here and now"....
or try the settings when you open the accuweather widget

Tabasco, how do you like your N8 so far on AT&T?Do the widgets have problems with updates? I just picked mine up yesterday. Do you find any problems with connections on websites or freezing up?
So far I haven't had any issues with the N8 on AT&T. The phone/voice and the data work fine. The widgets have updated fine. The web sites I have pulled up (mostly news), have looked ok in the browser. I've had no freezing up issues at all, but I always make sure I close applications when I am done with them.
My biggest problem has been finding things with Symbian ^3, but I am getting use to it now. All I have used in the past was Palm OS and Windows Mobile. I was originally going to wait for a Windows7 phone, but I am glad I got the N8 now.
A lot of the reviews of the N8 say Symbian ^3 isn't fit for a smartphone. Symbian ^3 does everything I need it to do.

I am also on AT&T, but currently own a non smartphone Sony Ericsson C905.. I am assuming I can just pop my SIM in the N8, and I will up and running.
Am i missing anything?
thanks guys
tabasco (10-15-2010)
yea, i have an unlimited data plan with my C905 right now
does anyone know the update interval for the accuweather widget?
I looked at it this morning, and it still showed last nights current conditions.
I had to go in and refresh data manually.. there should be an update interval setting, but there is none..
Do any of the other weather widgets update automatically?
am i the only one using the Accuweather widget now?
anyone else using it? is it supposed to update periodically throughout the day?
I'm using the Accuweather widget on mine, yur right there is no interval setting but my one seems to update whenever I unlock the phone, at the moment though I have my widgets set to offline mode to see how long I can get out of the battery.
I use accuweather too, dont know how to get it to refresh. I use the manual refresh in the program, or turn widgets to offline, then back online again
there should be a set up for refresh..the settings are a bit quirky and "hidden"
try it as im sure ive seen manual and auto settings...will give it a try later...

let me know if you figure it out because i cannot find any refresh settings
I still can't get accuweather to work. It worked on my previous C7 (which was replaced cos it died), but I keep getting a scripting error on this one.
I have forca weather app, but that doesn't work unless I am on my home wifi, with no options to change connection. Everything else connects fine, it's just badly made. No options or widget anyway.
The only thing left is handyweather. But I don't want to buy it if it's rubbish. And I can't tell if it has a widget or not.

Thanks Buxz. Sadly no widget, and I am not paying that much for it per year if it doesn't have one.
Oh well, heres hoping a developer wants some of my hard earned.

SPB Weather also works OK as desktop widget.. but isn't so polished, and cost $15
Ovi Store: SPB Weather
I like Accuweather, but just wish it had some refresh settings.. Have to manually refresh during the day.
Bartmanekul (11-29-2010)
Don't use SPB Weather on your N8s!
It has a bug that causes all 3rd party widgets font sizes to increase. As a result, you will have 'cut-up widgets' that will definitely look ugly. Uninstalling SPB weather does not solve the problem. I had to bring my N8 to a NokiaCare center just to have the SW reflashed and the pre-installed apps and contents reloaded.
Not only would you waste $15 of your money, it would also be a great inconvenience.
Here is a thread on the problem:

very strange, but the Accuweather widget is now updating on its own today... maybe they fixed something
