Brand new, SIM memory full but nothing there

I put one of my SIM cards into a new N97-mini. The memory on this SIM, according to my old Nokia 7600, is only "almost full" - room for another few SMS - current total 166. However my N97-mini is flashing that the SIM memory is full. When I look for SMS to delete there are none displayed apart from the welcome text.

Any ideas what's going on? The manual says find something to delete, but there isn't anything to delete.

Hiya, yes I did. The only thing in any of them is the one message in the Inbox ..

Then delete them on the 7600 and see what happens when you put the SIM in the N97 mini.

How old is that SIM ?

Oh b****x, sorry, there really ARE no messages on the SIM card, they're all on the 7600, BUT that makes it even worse .... even less reason fr the Mini to say the SIM is full if there really is nothing on it at all !!
All my SIM cards are old but I've never had any problem with any of them before now, and I swap them back and forth in my 7600 no probs.
I'm in the UK, the SIM I'm using in the Mini is Finnish but I have another that is a UK number. The UK one is only PAYG. I could get another PAYG just to check but wouldn't be able to use my number ... or would I?
Then again, thinking of the screen problem, maybe it's just a duff unit.

    D'Oh!

    > Press Menu key (bottom LHS physical oblong silver button)
    > Messaging
    > Options
    > SIM messages

It opens saying "No Messages" but at the bottom of the screen is a candy bar strip that shows the messages are being loaded.

I was too impatient and only saw the message in the dead centre of the black screen : "No Messages" and like an eejit assumed that that meant there were "No Messages".
